Starz Taps ‘Spartacus’ and ‘Thor’ Writers for Two New Series

Starz is continuing their mission to join the ranks of HBO and Showtime with original premium content, their two latest projects in development being two dramas from the writers behind 'Spartacus' and 'Thor.'

According to THR, the network announced deals with writers Steven S. DeKnight ('Spartacus') and J. Michael Straczynski ('Thor') for two shows that, from their descriptions, seem to be the Starz versions of 'The Walking Dead' and 'True Blood.'

While 'Spartacus' is set to end its run with the upcoming season next year, DeKnight's new show is called 'Incursion' and is described as "a sci-fi action thriller revolving around a group of soldiers caught in a war against a hostile alien race." Each season takes place on a new and exciting planet, allowing for numerous possibilities -- though we could see budgeting being an issue with this one.

The other series, from Staczynski, is called 'Vlad Dracula,' "a unique spin on the classic tale and a blending of historical facts of the 15th century Prince of Wallachia with the fictional character Dracula." This show would see king of all vampires rise from a respected ruler to the famous fictional blood sucker known today. Straczynski's credits include 'Thor,' 'Babylon 5,' 'The Changeling' and 'Underworld: Awakening.' Joining him on the project is Roy Lee, whose credits include 'The Ring' and 'The Strangers.'
