Supergirl already leaped one tall building to bring a new Superman into live-action, but is it open season on DC’s biggest heroes? A surprise Gotham reference from the Season 2 trailer certainly opens the door, but executive producers may not be ready to introduce any Bat-characters just yet.

You’re warned of minor spoilers for next Monday’s Supergirl Season 2 premiere, but a surprising reference to Gotham City will be spoken aloud by an unnamed rescue of Superman’s, as seen in the recent trailer. Said utterance marks the first official mention of Batman’s hometown (not counting the FOX series of the same name) from any Arrow-verse (or adjacent) show.

That said, executive producer Ali Adler tells TVLine that the reference may be a one-off, as Season 2 has enough crossover between the other CW series, not to mention a Flash-y musical next year:

We have this beautiful history with DC, and I like that we get to borrow from this amazing, wonderful canon that we have … I feel like we have our hands full with the crossover we’re shooting right now. I think people will be satisfied with how much crossover they’re getting this season.

TVLine goes on to note that Season 2's introduction of Floriana Lima’s Maggie Sawyer also serves as a Bat-crossover of sorts, while debunked rumors from earlier this year suggested we’d meet Sawyer’s partner, Kathy Kane (AKA Batwoman).

It would seem unlikely of DC to step on Gotham’s toes with any full-fledged Bat-characters on The CW, but is there hope yet for a more united DC TV?
