'Supernatural' season 8 might be less than a month away, but even though we've seen a full trailer the best surprises may yet be to come!  We've just learned that the Winchester brothers' eighth year will have a lot more than the usual faces to contend with, as a new player is about to enter the scene in a big way.  'Stargate' veteran Amanda Tapping has landed a recurring role as a new type of angel, but who might this mysterious new group she leads be?

Thanks to TVLine, we've just caught wind of some major 'Supernatural' scoop.  It seems that both Crowley and the Winchester brothers will have a bit more on their plate this year than originally thought, as one-time 'Stargate' and 'Sanctuary' star Amanda Tapping will appear as Naomi, a “cool and mysterious" angel, "part of a new group of angels we’ve never seen before.”

Naomi will appear beginning with the season's seventh episode "A Little Slice of Kevin," but even more about the character is revealed through her original casting description, which reads "no-nonsense bureaucrat...She wears a business suit and has her hair pulled back.  However, Naomi is less together than she appears to be. Her efficient manner belies a deeper emotionality."

Tapping isn't the only guest star to be announced today however, as former 'M*A*S*H' star Mike Farrell will appear in the season's eighth episode as Fred Jones, “an aging mentalist with a slippery grasp on reality." Perhaps not as cool as a renegade angel, but hey, why not?

Additionally, ‘Supernatural’ season 8 will see the return of DJ Qualls’ eccentric  hunter Garth, as well as ‘Futurama’ voice Lauren Tom.  ‘Battlestar Galactica’ veteran Ty Olsson will appear in the recurring role of a vampire named “Benny,” whom Dean meets during his stay in purgatory and ultimately helps him escape from said predicament.  Liane Balaban (‘Alphas,’ ‘Covert Affairs’) will appear as Sam’s new love interest Amelia, developed in the time the brothers spent separated.

What say you?  Does Amanda Tapping's role as a new type of angel get you excited for the eighth season of 'Supernatural,' premiering October 3?  What do you think will happen to the Winchester brothers this time around?
