As we rush headlong toward the Oscars, every award from every organization and critic group gives us a taste of what may be taking home the gold next month. Like many before it, the National Society of Film Critics has given their top prize to a film that is looking like a shoe-in for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award: Michael Haneke's 'Amour.'

'Amour' Review

Some good movies inspire endless repeat viewings. I've seen 'Citizen Kane' several dozen times; I've watched 'Ghostbusters' at least twice that. Then there are other good movies for which one viewing is enough for an entire lifetime. Films like 'Requiem For a Dream' and 'Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom' are powerful works of art -- perhaps too powerful and too overwhelming in their depictions of death, misery and human cruelty to endure more than once. 'Amour,' the new film from Michael Haneke, falls into the latter category. I am glad I saw it -- and hope I never see it again.

Trailer For Cannes Winner 'Amour'

How do you sell a Michael Haneke film in a two minute trailer? You don't. You can't. Not when most of the shots in the movie are probably longer than your average movie preview. The unfortunate thing about the lastest trailer for 'Amour' is that it's simply preaching to the cineaste choir. Despite winning the top prize at Cannes, collecting all kinds of critical praise and being the early frontrunner for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award, it's difficult to imagine your average moviegoer watching this trailer and declaring "Now that's what I want to see!"

Two Clips From Oscar Favorite 'Amour'

'Amour' has quite the pedigree. It's the latest film from the widely beloved (and often controversial) Michael Haneke and the winner of this year's Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In short, it's one of the immediate frontrunners for the Best Foreign Language film Oscar nominations. For some, two clips from this production is akin to two clips from 'The Avengers' and 'The Dark Knight Rises.' If you're one of those people, watch them below!
