It was over a year ago that the massive Sony hack revealed plans for a Jump Street-Men in Black crossover movie, and while it wasn’t entirely clear, we sort of assumed this would happen in 23 Jump Street. Interesting? Sure. Exciting? Well, maybe. With Phil Lord and Chris Miller busy prepping the young Han Solo movie, we’ve retained some healthy skepticism about this wacky crossover plan. But it looks like Sony has found a director to renew our optimism.

Gambit has had a few…problems. There were the rumors that Channing Tatum was going to walk over budget disputes, then Rupert Wyatt left the film without a director, eventually replaced a couple months later by Edge of Tomorrow’s Doug Liman (reportedly Tatum’s top choice). With an October release date approaching, it seemed a bit crazy that Gambit could be ready in time, but now it appears that the latest X-Men solo spinoff has been given a reprieve as Fox has yanked it from their schedule and set release dates for two additional, unnamed Marvel projects.

Starting today, audiences around the country can see Channing Tatum dancing his way through Hollywood history in Hail, Caesar! In a fortuitous bit of timing, it’s just been announced that his musical career will also continue in the very near future.

Though it has an overarching story — a movie star gets kidnapped in the middle of a major production — Hail, Caesar!’s Hollywood studio setting offers the Coens the opportunity for a series of delightful digressions. As its protagonist, studio boss Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), wanders the Capitol Pictures backlot, the Coens’ wander through every imaginable style and genre from the American film industry’s Golden Age. Hail, Caesar! features so many different styles and genres, in fact, that it almost qualifies as an anthology film, one that finds the Coens at their most versatile and playful.

January is a pretty dead month for new releases, but February has a few exciting prospects, chief among them Joel and Ethan Coen’s Hail, Caesar! The filmmaking duo are back with their first film since Inside Llewyn Davis, and while it also boasts a musical element, these new clips prove that the Coens’ latest is more comedy than drama.

How about some news regarding this month’s most highly-anticipated release that doesn’t have Star Wars in the title? Channing Tatum’s involvement with The Hateful Eight is one of the worst kept secrets, though Tatum, Quentin Tarantino and The Weinstein Company have refused to reveal his actual role, inspiring plenty of speculation and nitpicking of the film’s trailers. We won’t spoil his part for you, but Tatum does have some delightful stories about his time working with Tarantino and the cast.

For a superhero project with one of the most charismatic performers currently working locked in to star, Gambit has had a hell of a time getting off the ground. The X-Men spinoff film was originally slated to get Rupert Wyatt in the director's chair, but after butting heads with the studio over the creative direction of the film, Wyatt unceremoniously parted ways with producer/star Channing Tatum and the film. In the wake of Wyatt’s departure, Fox has been scrambling to find a worthy replacement, reportedly sitting down for heated chats with Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish, Straight Outta Compton’s F. Gary Gray, and Iron Man 3’s Shane Black.

The other day a rumor surfaced that Channing Tatum is interested in getting Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman for the Gambit solo movie following Rupert Wyatt’s exit last month. And we can now add two more names to the rumored director pile as a new report suggests that Fox is also eyeing Attack the Block director Joe Cornish and Iron Man 3 director Shane Black — all of these choices would be great, but the longer that director’s chair remains vacant, just about any choice will start to look appealing.
