‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ Review: “Blood Bath”

There is a figurative line, somewhere on television, between tedious melodrama and soap opera theatrics, and yet another line exists over which you can cross into the blissful, Lynchian territory of self-awareness and not-quite-rightness. In that surreal place, soapy theatrics and camp are embraced satirically and knowingly because this is a place that looks like somewhere you know but feels like an unsettling dream. I don’t think ‘American Horror Story’ is on the same level as David Lynch, but I’m starting to convince (delude) myself into thinking that maybe after tonight’s “Blood Bath,” it’s attempting to play with the same tones.

It’s been a good long while since we’ve heard anything from the front of FX’s ‘Fargo,’ last confirmed to prequelize itself in exploring the Sioux Falls case of a younger Lou Solverson, but we may yet have some friendly faces on the case. ‘Burn Notice’ star Jeffrey Donovan has reportedly been cast in a leading role, while ‘Parks and Recreation’ star Nick Offerman (and his mustache) has been approached as well.

We’ve not yet crossed Thanksgiving into December, but the rapidly-approaching 2015 slate of FX and FXX’s returning series has us ready for the new year. The cable networks have officially scheduled the season 6 premiere of ‘Archer,’ as well as the sixth and final season premiere of ‘Justified’ for January 2015, along with a third year for ‘The Americans,’ 10th for ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,’ and more.

'American Horror Story: Freak Show' Review: "Test of Strength"

Welcome to another episode of ‘Soap Opera: Freak Show,’ in which we’ve (hopefully) reached peak melodrama. Although Jessica Lange’s Elsa subdues herself somewhat in “Test of Strength,” allowing for more theatrical performances from the father/son bonding of Michael Chiklis’ Dell and Evan Peters’ Jimmy, there’s still way too much heightened drama and not enough of that horror that the show’s title promises. And where’s all the bonkers weirdness that we’ve come to love from Ryan Murphy and Co.? This season has worked itself into a woefully boring rut.

The first of ‘Justified’'s fiery final season trailers proved a pulse-pounding enough preview of the sixth run for FX’s gunslinger drama, but with the January 2015 premiere fast approaching (ugh, we know), it’s high-time Raylan and Boyd brought out the big guns. See which ‘Justified’ fan-favorites return and who might get a bullet through the head in the first full trailer for ‘Justified’'s final season!

Earlier today saw FOX stealing a bit of British thunder with its own adaptation of ‘Luther’ but it seems FX intends to mine far deeper in bringing the A-list Tom Hardy to the small screen. The cable network has officially picked up the rights to air Hardy’s forthcoming period drama collaboration with Ridley Scott and ‘Locke’’s Steven Knight, diamond adventurer drama ‘Taboo.’

A great many eons ago, revered Alan Moore-Eddie Campbell graphic novel ‘From Hell’ slashed into theaters with a mediocre Johnny Depp-led take on the Jack the Ripper tale. And while Moore famously criticized the adaptation to hell and back, 20th Century Fox may yet try again to adapt ‘From Hell’ as an FX event miniseries in the future.

Kurt Sutter’s FX biker opus ‘Sons of Anarchy‘ will rev its last within a few weeks time, but while the potential prequel cools its heels, work continues on Sutter’s medieval FX followup ‘The Bastard Executioner.’ And whatever Gemma Teller’s ultimate fate may be, we can expect to see Katey Sagal right beside her husband once more with a role in the new series.
