‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Releases Even More Photos and Magazine Covers

X-Men Days of Future Past

There's a rich tradition among the superhero movie elite of studios offering up the all the goods (and by goods we mean footage) before their movies even hit theaters. Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart Take Over ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’

NBC
NBC

Sure, Seth Meyers gets a few good-natured digs in before Ian McKellen flips the script and quite literally takes over his own 'Late Night,' but that doesn't mean that anyone was having a bad time on the show last night. Meyers, finishing up his first week as 'Late Night' host, welcomed everyone's favorite pair of best friends -- McKellen and Patrick Stewart -- and the results were both charming and quite funny.

X-Men Days of Future Past Stills Portraits

The main thrust of the advertising campaign for 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' is that the film will contain characters from both the original 'X-Men' franchise and prequel film 'X-Men: First Class,' making this one of the biggest superhero movies ever made. ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ Review

The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug Review
Warner Bros.

There comes a time when we must stop kidding ourselves. These 'Hobbit' films – with 'The Desolation of Smaug' representing the shank of the trilogy – are not real movies. These are exploitation films for Tolkien nuts, for enthusiasts of the original 'Lord of the Rings' movies and for audiences so hungry for high fantasy they'll gobble up whatever is served to them and ask for seconds.

As someone who has sympathy, but not empathy, for those who have such proclivities, I can get why someone might come away liking this picture. But that is more of an involuntary reaction to exposure to certain elements, not the summation of a film. Listen, there's a grey-bearded wizard who warns in low tones about a place that sounds like “Doggledoor.” And there's someone referred to as “Thorin son of Thrain son of Thror.” I love that geekorama stuff more than most. It's hilarious, and I'll probably refer to my cat as “Thorin son of Thrain son of Thror” for the next week. But this movie doesn't cohere – there's no forward momentum, no character development, no story happening. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a fibber.
