Watching last night's 'Saturday Night Live,' we can't help but wonder how many episodes of 'The Voice' the writers had to watch so they could properly skewer a show they obviously find ridiculous. Although host Melissa McCarthy is technically the lead of the sketch, it's mostly an excuse for the cast to break out their impressions of the singing competition's hosts with some very funny results. Watch it below!
Last night's 'Saturday Night Live' saw 'Bridesmaids' and 'Identity Thief' star Melissa McCarthy hosting the beloved sketch comedy show for the second time and she entered with a bang. Well, actually a stumble. As the comedienne took the stage for her opening monologue, her choice of footwear sabotaged the whole thing with hilarious results. Watch if for yourself below!
NBC may have been busy today with some other big late-night news, but that will all fall by the wayside when 'Identity Thief' and 'Bridesmaids' star Melissa McCarthy returns to the 'SNL' stage for a second time, accompanied by musical guest Phoenix. McCarthy's performance earned praise the first time around despite some lackluster writing, so will lightning strike twice? Find out with the first promos for Melissa McCarthy's 'SNL' turn on April 6!
'SNL' earned itself quite a bit of good will in this past weekend's dual-hosting turn with national treasure Justin Timberlake, and the streak looks to go even higher in the coming weeks. Not only has NBC confirmed that 'Identity Thief' star Melissa McCarthy will return for her second time hosting on April 6, but upcoming 'The Internship' star Vince Vaughn will also make his second appearance the following week on April 13! With plenty of buzz from this weekend's upcoming Justin Timberlake-hosted installment of 'SNL, the long-running sketch comedy series seems to have gotten the message to stick with its strongest players. Following the success of 'Identity Thief,' Melissa McCarthy will return to the 'SNL' stage for the second time in two years, hosting the April 6 installment, but who will join the 'Mike & Molly' star as musical guest?
'Identity Thief' has been in theaters for less than two weeks and it's already grossed $76 million at the box office, an enormous amount for a modestly budgeted comedy with a known but untested leading lady. Although critics haven't been as kind as audiences, $100 million is a sure thing at this point and we wouldn't rule out $150 million if March is kind to it. So of course Universal has already thought about an 'Identity Thief 2.' They probably thought about it two weeks ago.
Is Melissa McCarthy a movie star yet? The opening weekend of 'Identity Thief' suggests that yes, she is. After all, all of those people weren't flocking to this movie because of Jason Bateman (as delightful as he is). Anyway, all of this pretty much means that McCarthy's asking price just doubled.
Funny is, of course, subjective. I find Woody Allen funny but there are plenty of people who find him about as amusing as being slowly asphyxiated in plastic bags from CVS. Still, I'll hazard to guess that there is no one who will find Melissa McCarthy obnoxiously singing along to Kelis' not-at-all-current "Milkshake" funny. Especially when 'Identity Thief' - a new "comedy" with McCarthy and Jason Bateman - goes to quite successful lengths to make you HATE her character. And you just might wind up hating this movie too.
