There are plenty of reasons to be excited for Annihilation, the upcoming adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s 2014 novel. First off, it’s Alex Garland‘s latest project since Ex Machina. Second, the book is great, full of eerie, enchanting horrors...
Thor and Jane Foster’s breakup has been one of those background subplots shrouded in mystery from the rest of the Avengers, though, to the rest of us who can see Natalie Portman’s real-life career flourishing beyond the bounds of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it makes perfect sense. The breakup was disappointing to some fans (me, I shipped it, it’s the purest relationship in the whole series and it’s OVER and I’m SAD ABOUT IT), but rest assured that Thor: Ragnarok will finally give us an in-universe explanation. Kinda.
If you’re not excited for Annihilation, you should be. Jeff VanderMeer’s book is one of those novels you don’t hear much about until someone thrusts it into your hands, and then suddenly everyone seems to be talking about it. It’s surreal, baffling, and beautiful, and Alex Garland’s (Ex Machina) film adaptation has finally, finally gotten an official release date.

You don’t have to be a fan of HBO’s The Leftovers to know Mimi Leder is one of the most talented directors working today. (For more proof, just look at the headline of The Ringer’s profile of Leder from earlier today.) An upcoming Ruth Bader Ginsberg biopic starring Natalie Portman became all the more exciting when the Deep Impact director was rumored to be attached; what a fantastic trifecta of brilliant women that would be! We won’t have to dream about it any longer though. While discussing the HBO drama, Leder confirmed the biopic will be her next project.
Last week Natalie Portman starred in the new music video for James Blake’s “My Willing Heart.” The stunning black and white video, directed by Anna Rose Holmer, seemed like a random collaboration between Portman, The Fits director, and the British musician – you know, cool creatives just hanging out making art. But it turns out Portman and Holmer have another project underway.
There are three reasons to stop what you’re doing: 1. There’s a new James Blake music video. 2. It stars Natalie Portman. 3. It’s directed by The Fits’ Anna Rose Holmer.
