Consider this weekend a study of three animation companies. Temporarily forget about 'The Amazing Spider-Man' and 'Ted' and 'Moonrise Kingdom.' What do the box office numbers of 'Ice Age: Continental Drift,' 'Brave' and 'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' tell us about their respective studios? 'Ice Age' won the weekend, but is it actually a winner?

With the exception of poor Katy Perry, everyone was a winner at the box office this week. Seriously. Of the top ten films, nine of them either opened well or held well, making this one of the most consistent weekends of the summer season. Filmmakers and studios: pat yourselves on the backs. You've earned this one.

Despite middling online buzz and mixed reviews, the opening day of Marc Webb's 'The Amazing Spider-Man' proved that the wall crawling superhero stil has plenty of webbing left in his web shooters. Or, if you want a non-geek translation, the opening day of the controversial reboot saw the film take in a whole bunch of money, breaking a record in the process.

“Ultimately the audience will tell us if they want one.” That’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ director Marc Webb talking recently about ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ But this is a silly statement because, first of all, the audience didn’t really want a ‘Spider-Man’ reboot yet got one anyway, and, second, Sony has actually been planning the trilogy for a while now. In fact, 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' is already in the rewrite stage, courtesy of ‘Transformers’ scribes Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci, and is set for release on May 2, 2014. So what will happen in 'Amazing Spider-Man 2?'

The official Facebook page for Marc Webb’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ celebrated the film’s release with some choice words about the movie’s place in a larger picture. Was it a typo? Wishful thinking? Or confirmation that we’re getting at least one more Spidey film (and possibly two more)?

'The Amazing Spider-Man' Review

"There is only one plot in all of fiction," Peter Parker's English teacher tells him near the end of Marc Webb's 'The Amazing Spider-Man.' These words make an all-too-fitting conclusion to a story that's essentially recycled from a ten-year-old movie which was itself repurposed from a forty-year-old comic book. If you go to the theater regularly enough these days, you see a marquee filled with remakes and sequels and prequels and (as in the case of 'The Amazing Spider-Man') reboots. It often does feel like there's only one plot in movies.
And we've seen it already.

Sony senses they have something special on their hands with Marc Webb’s upcoming reboot ‘The Amazing Spider-Man.’ Tracking numbers released on Thursday say the film could earn as much as $125 million over the July 4 frame. (The numbers were slightly behind ‘The Avengers,’ and we all know how that movie played out.) And early reviews hitting the Web have been positive. So Sony’s making a wise decision and bringing Spidey to the fans earlier than expected. Find out how you can get tickets!
