Wes Anderson is back! Well, he didn't really go anywhere, but the director sure does take his sweet time between movies. His latest, 'Moonrise Kingdom,' is not only one of our favorite films of the year so far, it's breaking box office records, so pardon us for wishing he'd work a little more often. Anderson fans still waiting for 'Moonrise Kingdom' to come to their city (or those wanting just a little more of a fix) are in luck: the filmmaker is apparently premiering a new short film online next week.
Wes Anderson's 'Moonrise Kingdom,' opening this week in limited release, is what we've come to expect from Anderson, the mind behind 'Rushmore,' 'The Royal Tenenbaums,' and 'The Fantastic Mr. Fox' -- somehow completely artificial and entirely heartfelt, loaded with dry punchlines that, somehow, bring tears to your eyes. The story of two 12-year-olds who embark on a runaway adventure of love, the entire film takes place on an Island called Penzance; that's not a name picked at random.
'Moonrise Kingdom' is the most Wes Anderson movie ever made. Only 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' is less connected to reality, and that's just because foxes don't really talk. It takes place in an alternate universe nostalgic for a dozen different storybook childhoods, none of which ever existed, but are presented with a precision that bespeaks a world that is fully developed...somewhere.
It is mannered and preposterous, but hilarious, sweet, melancholy, invigorating and gorgeous to look at and to listen to. It is Wes Anderson's best movie since 'Rushmore,' though more confident and complete of a film than anything he's done. It is (deep breath before I say this) my favorite film of the year so far.
There's plenty of activities and events that families will be doing on Memorial Day weekend, but what about going to the movies to see a master at work? We're referring to Wes Anderson's latest comedy/drama 'Moonrise Kingdom.' Do you want to find out more on the film? Of course you do. Then what you should do is check out the new series of featurettes.
Wes Anderson's 'Moonrise Kingdom' is set to not only open the Cannes film festival, but it will play In Competition for the coveted Palme d'Or as well. But that's not all the 'Moonrise Kingdom' news for today -- a new clip was released and it expands a little on what we know about the film so far.
'Moonrise Kingdom' is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Wes Anderson's first live action film since the woefully divisive 'The Darjeeling Limited,' and his first effort since 'The Fantastic Mr. Fox,' Anderson teams with Roman Coppola (son of Francis Ford, brother of Sofia) for his latest.
As expected, everything is precious and adorable.
Feature-film directors moonlight on 30- and 60-second commercials all of the time. Nike, alone, has recruited such talents as Terry Gilliam, Guy Ritchie and Michael Mann for their marketing spots. Sony, also, has hired geniuses like David Lynch for its gigs. And now Wes Anderson is joining their ranks.
