Alamo Drafthouse CEO Tim League Has a Predictably Great Response to Texting in Theaters

The Alamo Drafthouse is built on a simple concept: great movies, good food, and most important of all — don’t talk or use your cell phone in the theater, or they will not hesitate to kick you out without a refund. Drafthouse CEO Tim League has devoted his brand to focusing on why we go to theaters in the first place, which is to watch movies, despite what some movie-goers and major corporate chains would have you believe. Following AMC’s briefly disastrous flirtation with allowing people to text in their theaters, League delivered a very thoughtful response, but if you’d rather watch a TL;DR version, you can see his predictably great reaction to this ill-conceived concept in the video above.

Fantastic Fest
Fantastic Fest is easily one of the best, most fun, most insane, and most booze-soaked film festivals in the world. Held every year at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas, the festival created by Drafthouse owner Tim League is filled with genre film selections from all over the world, offering a unique experience and atmosphere. This year's fest includes highly-anticipated films like Green Room, High-Rise, The Martian, and The Witch, as well as smaller and equally exciting titles like The Devil's Candy, Demon, and Son of Saul.

Netflix
It was only a matter of time before we began to see the effects of Netflix’s foray into the film distribution business. We previously assumed that some major theater chains would refuse to show films which premiere simultaneously on the streaming service, but today brings confirmation of those assumptions, as some of the top theater chains have vowed not to screen Beasts of No Nation at their venues due to Netflix’s release plan.

Sony Pictures
Earlier today it was announced that Sony will release ‘The Interview’ in select theaters and on VOD this Christmas Day after all. Following the massive hacker attack on the company and subsequent terrorist threats from the group known as Guardians of Peace, Sony had no choice but to cancel the film’s release after major theater chains decided not to show the film. In a wonderful turn of events, following a petition from Art House Convergence, which was signed by many independent exhibitors, Sony is moving forward with the release. We have the full list of theaters that will screen the film this Thursday.

Fantastic Fest 2013 kicks off this week in Austin, Texas -- every year, Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League and his selection committee choose a variety of genre films to present to movie fans and Drafthouse devotees at the festival, which takes place this year at the recently opened Lakeline location in North Austin. Fantastic Fest is the kind of festival where you'll see everything from Keanu Reeves' new martial arts film, 'Man of Tai Chi,' to independent gems like 'Detective Downs' (a movie about a private investigator with Downs Syndrome), and festival favorites like 'Escape from Tomorrow,' which was filmed guerrilla-style at Disneyland.
We had a chance to chat with Mr. League about what we can expect at this year's festival, the movie he's most excited to share with attendees, and the big events he has in store.
