‘Unbroken’: Maybe Not All Great Stories Are Meant to Be Movies

by Mike Ryan December 2, 2014 @ 12:34 PM
Maybe not every story about the sheer determination of the human spirit over impossible odds needs to be a movie. This was my thought while watching Angelina Jolie’s ‘Unbroken,’ the true story of Louis Zamperini (played by rising star Jack O’Connell), a World War II hero who is brutally beaten to within an inch of his life in a Japanese prisoner of war camp so many times that I lost count. The real life story is inspiring—and it truly is remarkable that he survived—but to watch it play out in front of your eyes over and over and over again almost feels sadistic. It gets to the point that every time we see O’Connell on screen, we automatically think, “I bet this poor man is going to get beaten again, isn’t he?” And we are always right.

Even lauded talents star in terrible films, but sometimes—as is the case with these ten thespians—they happen to star in the worst of the bunch during the exact same calendar year that they turned in those Oscar-worthy works. Oops.

'Maleficent' Director Robert Stromberg Explains Those Reshoot Rumors

by Mike Ryan May 27, 2014 @ 11:30 AM
With a budget of upwards of a reported $180 million, it may have seemed like a surprise choice to tap Robert Stromberg to direct Disney's tent-pole summer offering, 'Maleficent,' starring Angelina Jolie as the title character made famous as the villain in 'Sleeping Beauty.' John Lee Hancock had been brought onto the project for reshoots, a notion that today Stromberg bristles at hearing -- claiming that Hancock was only there to help make cuts to the first act and any reshoots were still shot by Stromberg. Ahead, Stromberg addresses the reshoot stories in depth.

'Maleficent' Sneak Peek: Sleeping Beauty Gets Pricked in New Clip and Featuette

In the latest clip and featurette for 'Maleficent,' Angelina Jolie suggests the film is faithful to the original story, and that her character loves being evil. We always figured that this film was a more modern take that cast Maleficent as the possible hero of the story, though this clip doesn't answer that question entirely. Which makes us curious how it plays out.

If nothing else, 'Maleficent' looks like a grand showcase for Angelina Jolie's ability to vamp it up on screen. The new trailer for Disney's revisionist take on 'Sleeping Beauty' is as gorgeous and mysterious as the rest, giving Jolie plenty of time to shine and ham it up as the title anti-hero.

'Maleficent' Trailer Honors the "Legacy" of 'Sleeping Beauty'

by Nick Romano March 17, 2014 @ 9:42 AM
Disney's latest 'Maleficent' trailer sure brings back fond memories of watching the animated rendition of 'Sleeping Beauty' as a kid (or watching them with your kids), but this is not that story. Angelina Jolie smolders (quite literally) as Maleficent in this origin tale of how the iconic witch came to be so ... well, malevolent.
