The next film in the Dark Universe of Universal Monsters has been “paused” while its creators work on its script.

Angelina Jolie may be busy promoting her latest directorial effort, but she’ll soon be back with horns. The actress recently confirmed she’d return for Disney’s sequel to 2014’s Maleficent, and now the studio has found their director...

The noted actress/director is going to decompress from a ‘family situation’ for a bit before getting back behind the camera.

Jolie directed this true story about life in Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge period, which comes to Netflix next month.

After Brangelina’s split, the world watched with eyes wide and breaths held to see how the two would move on, and what projects they would or would not be pursuing. Sometimes breakups greatly affect actors’ careers, but with the star power that both Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have, we knew neither of them would be in much trouble. Pitt has Allied coming up with Marion Cotillard, Jolie will next be seen onscreen in the Maleficent sequel, and today it was announced that the actress is in early talks for an adaptation of Shoot Like a Girl, based on the memoir of Air Force Major Mary Jennings Hegar.

Centuries from now, when the world is covered with water and humanity is extinct and the end of A.I. Artificial Intelligence becomes a documentary, the future computers trying to understand our civilization from the pop culture we’ve left behind will scratch their robo-heads at Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Ancient records speak of the rise of some kind of symbiotic organism known as “Brangelina,” and then some years later its dissolution. The robots uncover an enormous amount of fascination in this creature. There are thousands of pictures of this two-headed being smiling, looking glamorous, in front of backdrops festooned with corporate logos. Separately, the individuals that comprised Brangelina made many movies, but they appeared together only twice: In 2015’s By the Sea and in 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Then and now, the film is one of the stranger works made in Hollywood in the 21st Century.

Dear 2016, can you please end already? Is the apocalypse here yet? Is this the afterlife and we’re stuck living in a Roland Emmerich movie? After everything you’ve put us through, from multiple real-world tragedies to a presidential election from hell to far too many celebrity deaths, why oh why have you destroyed love? As of the morning of Tuesday, September 20, 2016, love died along with the end of Brangelina.

It’s been a while since we heard anything about Kenneth Branagh’s new adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express, based on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery novel. Branagh is set to direct the film, in which he’ll also star as famed fictional detective Hercule Poirot, and it looks like he’s begun assembling his cast of suspects, as Angelina Jolie is in talks to come aboard the project.

Things are getting fairly productive with Universal’s shared universe reboot of their classic monster properties. In addition to their reboot of The Mummy, the studio is also developing new films based on The Wolf Man, Van Helsing and Bride of Frankenstein. As recently rumored, Universal is after Angelina Jolie to play the titular role, and while we wait to see whether or not she’ll accept their proposal (ahem), the studio has tapped Spider-Man scribe David Koepp to work on a suitable screenplay.

Angelina Jolie’s latest directorial effort was a bit of a risk for Universal, and one that doesn’t seem to be paying off as By the Sea has made less than half a million at the box office and word-of-mouth has been…less than kind. But it looks like the studio may have been well-prepared to take that risk, as a new report suggests that they took an interesting approach to negotiating their deal to produce Jolie’s film — and they have a couple of ideas for how the actress and director can pay them back.
