Bad Robot Taps ‘Son of a Gun’ Director For Supernatural D-Day Movie

The next big project on Bad Robot’s docket is Overlord, a World War II-era film that — unsurprisingly — has a bit of a twist. Based on a story idea from J.J. Abrams and Billy Ray (Captain Phillips), the studio’s latest effort sounds both timely and somewhat ambitious, but it looks as though Abrams & Co. have found the perfect director for the job in Julius Avery — best known for helming the A24 thriller Son of a Gun.

Because things that are adaptations of other things tend to sell pretty well (see: the current reboot storm we’re in the middle of, or any TV show based on a movie, or any movie based on a musical or book or comic) studios are once again looking at classic literature to adapt to film. Today’s latest news comes from Disney, which is planning a Don Quixote movie, based on that giant classic work of literature you probably read an abridged version of in your Spanish class.

Scott Fitzgerald's unfinished work 'The Last Tycoon,' but how far along is the project?
