Yesterday’s horrid SNL news aside, this weekend will bring one of the most anticipated outings of the year, as alumni Tracy Morgan returns to the SNL stage after 2014's debilitating accident. As we saw at the Emmys, Tracy is still Tracy, getting everyone pregnant, and mistaking Bobby Moynihan for Horatio Sanz, as one does.

When Lorne Michaels is producing a movie, it’s probably pretty easy to get a bunch of former and current SNL cast members to show up for cameo appearances. Michaels produced the upcoming indie comedy Staten Island Summer, which the trailer sells as a solid coming of age tale even without all those SNL cameos — though they probably won’t hurt.

SNL took a short break after Avengers star Chris Hemsworth put the hammer down on the long-running NBC sketch comedy, though an even more muscular outing will arrive this Saturday with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s fourth hosting. You know Nick Kroll best for his comedic work, and while there’s certainly some of that on display in the trailer for Adult Beginners, we also get to see a bit of his more vulnerable and sensitive side. The first trailer for the new indie dramedy has plenty of laughs and several familiar funny faces, but it also promises to be a thoughtful and insightful film about coming-of-middle-age.

However, what begins as a pretty standard (and even deliberately lame) joke evolves into something far more surprising and funny.

‘SNL’ has rarely been afraid to wade into current events, so it‘s not surprising that the show took some time to focus on the recent hubbub surrounding new immigration policies and executive orders. And since the show realizes that not everyone is up to date on the political process, it uses the shorthand of the beloved series ‘Schoolhouse Rock’ to remind everyone of the necessary details.
