There are several big mysteries in the neo-noir thriller Triple 9 but none bigger than this one: How the hell did they get a cast this great to show up for a movie this mediocre?

Following this week’s reveal of the first official images of Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme and Kevin Feige’s hints about the next Infinity Stone comes new intel on the other characters in Doctor Strange — namely, Tilda Swinton’s take on the Ancient One and Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo, who may or may not be a villain? It’s a bit more complicated than that.

Production has officially begun on Marvel’s Doctor Strange, with director Scott Derrickson at the helm and Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme in what promises to be a truly unique and, well, strange offering from the MCU. Marvel has formally announced the start of production and confirmed the central cast, including former Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen, who had previously been in talks for a role.

I don’t think I’ve ever not recognized Kate Winslet in a movie before. But I did not recognize her in the latest trailer for Triple 9. It wasn’t until her name flashed onscreen that I even realized it was her — and even then I had to rewind to see for myself. According to Wikipedia, which is never wrong, she plays “a Russian-Israeli Mafia moll.” My favorite kind of Mafia moll!

This week we got our first unofficial look at Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Sporting a rugged beard, Cumberbatch certainly looks the part of the Sorcerer Supreme, and it’s given us a tiny idea of director Scott Derrickson’s aesthetic for the film. But what of Cumberbatch’s co-stars? Glad you asked! Today brings our first look at Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, all robed up and looking sort of like a mystical Jedi.

“He can change his name. He can dump his car. I will still find him.” Julia Roberts is not even close to messing around in the new trailer for Secret in Their Eyes, Billy Ray’s remake of Juan Jose Campanella’s gripping Spanish film that won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009. Secret in Their Eyes looks similar in tone to Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, featuring plenty of gut-wrenching drama and a revenge-minded, grieving parent.

John Hillcoat is the director behind The Road and Lawless, which makes Triple 9 an instant must-see. Originally conceived as a starring vehicle for Lawless star Shia LaBeouf, Triple 9 was put on the back burner for a few years before Hillcoat got back to work on it, replacing LaBeouf with Casey Affleck for this nasty little crime thriller. The first trailer has arrived, and as the red band warning promises, things get very, very brutal.

The Martian is probably the most fun you will ever have watching a bunch of nerds solve math problems.

It looks like Dr. Strange is going to have an old friend over for dinner. (Creepy slurping noise.)

Secret in Their Eyes is based on the acclaimed, Oscar-winning Argentinian film The Secret in Their Eyes (differentiated by the titular “The”), and the new English remake looks like it may very well be gunning for an Oscar, too. Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman and Chiwetel Ejiofor star in the upcoming dramatic thriller, which centers on a brutal murder and the pursuit of justice that follows.
