For every review praising the fun and artistry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are three more thinkpieces bemoaning the fact that we still haven’t gotten our Black Widow movie. And for good reason: She’s a character with a fascinating history whose arcs in the comics are always dynamic and interesting and grounded in current events, plus she’s the only one on the core team who hasn’t had her own movie yet. Every time the prospect is brought up, the folks at Marvel are usually neutral-to-positive about the idea — even her costar Chris Evans thinks she should get her own.

No bubble can last forever — it must eventually pop, as is the nature of bubbles. Marvel has built a vast media empire on the strength of such stars as Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, and Chris Hemsworth, but no actor would be content with playing and re-playing the same role forever. All good (and obscenely lucrative) things must come to an end, and Evans has begun the long and painful process of consciously uncoupling from Captain America’s star-spangled shield and cowl. But a new quote from the actor suggests that he may not be the first big name to make a departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Hardcore fans are happy, the movies make billions of dollars, and the web of characters and their adventures is getting ever larger.

What makes Johansson’s ranking even more notable, however, is her earnings — while RDJr. placed ninth on this year’s list of the highest-paid actors with $33 million, Johansson ranked third on the actress list with $25 million.

We already know Avengers: Infinity War is going to be huge, with the current MCU arcs building toward a crossover event that promises to be the studio’s biggest yet — even bigger than Captain America: Civil War. According to previous comments made by directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Infinity War will feature dozens of characters from the Marvel universe, including Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord and Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. As for the rest of the lineup, we can only make educated guesses, but a new casting call may have spilled the beans.

After delivering two disappointing Spider-Man movies, director Marc Webb recruited Captain America for his return to the intimate realm of indie dramas, free from the tyranny of colorful super-villains, CGI and spandex. The first trailer for Gifted features real people dealing with real problems, like hunky Chris Evans struggling to raise his niece, who just happens to be a child genius — which is still kind of like a superhero story, right?

Of the many bonus features included in each new Marvel Blu-ray / DVD release, the gag reels are always the most special of the bunch, especially when the whole MCU gang gets together.
