Those following Steven Soderbergh’s fantastically auteur medical drama The Knick understandably found themselves aghast at the Season 2 finale, a stark reminder that Soderbergh and series star Clive Owen only signed on for two years. Now, the director confirms that he himself will exit the series, though Cinemax may well move forward with a Season 3 (and 4) that looks markedly different.

For all the critical steam Steven Soderbergh and Clive Owen’s Cinemax period drama The Knick picked up over two seasons (the second of which ended just last night), the series has long been conceived and contracted to run only two years. At least one major character’s fate was left in doubt by the Season 2 finale, though Cinemax has officially begun consideration of a third, ordering an initial script.

Clive Owen. Dane DeHaan. Ethan Hawke. Noted supermodel/eyebrow possessor/Taylor Swift friend Cara Delevingne. Pop ubersongstress Rihanna. When Clive Owen’s John Thackery says “I feel better than ever” in the new Season 2 trailer for The Knick, it’s hard to take that at face value — or any value, really. Last we saw Thackery, he was holed up in a nice rehab home for his cocaine addiction, where he was being treated with a revolutionary new drug: heroin. Hardly a promising ending for the brilliant, spun-out doctor, but whether he’s actually better or not, Thackery is back.

Clive Owen has had a bit of a spotty career in recent years, but thanks to Steven Soderbergh’s Cinemax series The Knick, we’ve been reminded just how great Owen can be with the right material. Perhaps a new Luc Besson film will make good use of him, as the actor has joined Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne in the director’s new, high-concept sci-fi film Valerian.

If you are not watching The Knick, it should definitely be high up on your list of television priorities. Steven Soderbergh’s early 20th century period medical drama is gorgeously cinematic and exquisitely intense, and may be some of the filmmaker’s finest work to date. Today brings our first look at Season 2 via an appropriately unnerving and slightly surreal teaser — in addition to revealing a quarantine in San Francisco, the teaser also promises an October premiere.

Clive Owen has been having something of a comeback, with his superb role on Steven Soderbergh’s series ‘The Knick’ giving him a much-needed boost and reminding audiences that he’s still damn great. Perhaps seeking to capitalize on that comes the trailer for ‘Last Knights,’ a long-delayed medieval action-drama which was originally filmed two years ago and has since been languishing in studio limbo.
