We'll Miss You, 'How I Met Your Mother' (But, Please Leave)

Admittedly, I’m feeling much more melancholy today about the  ‘How I Met Your Mother’ series finale than I expected. Which, on the surface, makes little sense because, boy, Season 9 has been a slog to watch. (I was once a religious viewer, but now it’s come to the point where, over this past weekend, I had to participate in a ten-episode marathon just to get caught up for the finale.) Look, I’m pretty late to the “this final season has been bad” chorus, but I don’t think that’s really the point here – or, at least, it doesn’t quite explain why I feel forlorn about a show that recently I found difficult to watch.

As if 'How I Met Your Mother' hadn't been under enough criticism in its ninth and final season, the most recent installment "Slapsgiving 3: Slappointment in Slapmarra" seemed to highlight several surprisingly racist Asian stereotypes that have appropriately caused an uproar. Following the controversy, series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have reached out to apologize for the offensive nature of the episode.

Kids, remember when spinoffs seemed to all of a sudden become the go-to extension plan for aging TV series, and in the same year TV managed to churn out 'Breaking Bad’ spinoff ‘Better Call Saul,’ ‘The Walking Dead’ companion series, and ‘The Vampire...

'Delivery Man' Review

To be a heart-on-your-sleeve weepie in 2013, you've got to have some far-fetched gimmick. 'About Time' has time travel, 'Safe Haven' had ghosts and 'Delivery Man' has Vince Vaughn as an anonymous sperm donor hunted down by hundreds of his young-adult offspring. The mechanics of the plot are so ludicrous that audiences should be forgiven for shouting, “No, sorry, it wouldn't work that way!” back at the screen. But one has to give the movie credit for its sheer audacity. It refused to offer an explanation for its instigating illogic. Great character actor Damian Young gets the unenviable task of delivering the hook with the phrase “certain complications arose ...”
