Deepwater Horizon

Despite dominating the box office last week, The Magnificent Seven took a not-insignificant tumble this weekend, slipping to third place and allowing Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children and Deepwater Horizon to claim the top two spots. However, both newcomers opened below expectations, making this an odd capper to a September that was otherwise full of surprise hits.

Hollywood has finally found someone to compete with Nazis for the title of ultimate movie villains: Oil executives. In Deepwater Horizon, the blue-collar crew of an off-shore rig battles malfunctioning equipment, an unpredictable ocean, pipe blow outs, explosions, and fires. But all those dangers seem to pale in comparison to the threat posed by a bunch of starchy white men. In their uniform of blue button-down shirts and khaki pants, they’re the walking embodiment of pure, unadulterated greed.

Adios summer, the fall festival season has begun! On the heels of the Venice and Telluride film festivals, the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival kicks off this week with a handful of films we can’t wait to see. The fall festivals are a time when we can finally put the ugly remnants of summer movie season behind us (especially this year), and get a look at the movies that may redeem the year in cinema.

With a summer movie season as bad as this one, the closer we get to fall festivals, the better. In a little over a month we’ll get our first look at the the fall movie season when the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival kicks off on September 8. TIFF is the major fall festival, following Venice and Telluride, that gives us our first glimpse at major awards season players.

I hate boats. Okay, maybe hate is strong. I just don’t like them. I’m not necessarily phobic; I’ll get on one when I have to. Teen Wolf and Maze Runner star Dylan O’Brien has rapidly become a talent to watch — the young actor was rumored for the part of the new Spider-Man in our post-Andrew Garfield world, and while that didn’t pan out, O’Brien has just landed a pretty sweet gig instead. The actor has been cast opposite Mark Wahlberg in Peter Berg’s upcoming Deepwater Horizon movie, which isn’t a bad way to transition from YA to more mature projects.
