'Aftershock' Review

As an East Coaster I don't think much about earthquakes but after watching 'Aftershock' - the low budget tectonic exploitation picture from director Nicolas Lopez and producer/co-writer/co-star Eli Roth - I now have something else to be worried about.
'Aftershock' seems content to not be a game changer. By coloring within the lines it is an effective midnight movie, working best when it is simply pushing the story forward, letting the nightmare of the situation stay front and center. There isn't much in the way of scares but the gross-outs are plentiful and the overall sensation of dread is well delivered.

UPDATE: Our own Jordan Hoffman has reviewed the film here.
The Toronto International Film Festival is happening as you read this and while you're probably not there (And if you are, why are reading this? Go see a movie!), you too can have a little taste of what's going on up there. How about a clip from the earthquake-themed thriller 'Aftershock,' which is playing as part of the fest's typically amazing Midnight Madness series?

It's been five years since Eli Roth's 'Hostel: Part II' hit the screen, which is a mighty long absence for an up and coming director. That's not to say he hasn't kept busy, with such projects as a lead role in Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds' and co-writing 'The Man with the Iron Fists,' which stars Russell Crowe. Crowe and Roth may work together again with 'Harker.'

How Much Money is Netflix Putting into 'Hemlock Grove?'

Independent of embarrassing mishaps like that "Qwikster" nonsense, it would seem that Netflix has quite a bit of money to burn these days.  There's that prized acquisition of the rights to new 'Arrested Development' episodes, doubling down on the Kevin Spacey drama 'House of Cards' with a two-season order, and even a renewal for Steve Van Zandt's 'Lillyhammer.'
Still those might pale in comparison to the money being sunk into upcoming supernatural scare-fest 'Hemlock Grove,' according to the latest report.
