We came very close to getting a live-action update of The Little Mermaid directed by Sofia Coppola, but our dreams of being part of that world (or at least viewing it) were crushed thanks to good ol’ creative differences. It’s been three years since Coppola’s previous film, The Bling Ring, but our wait for her next project may soon be over as the director is reportedly reuniting with Kirsten Dunst for a remake of Civil War romance The Beguiled, with Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning set to co-star.

Nicolas Winding Refn’s highly-anticipated follow-up to the divisive Only God Forgives began filming this year in Los Angeles, and while there’s been a considerable amount of interest in The Neon Demon, it’s taken a while for a studio to snatch up the distribution rights. Amazon has stepped forward, adding Refn’s latest to their growing slate of exclusive releases and giving the film a 2016 release date. In addition to being on the shortlist for a leading role in Star Wars: Episode 8, rising star Olivia Cooke is also on a shortlist for another major upcoming film: Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernest Cline’s nostalgia-driven novel Ready Player One. Cooke is currently in contention for the role along with Elle Fanning and Mistress America newcomer Lola Kirke.

About Ray caused a bit of a stir some months ago when Elle Fanning was cast in the titular role of Ray, a transgender teen boy transitioning from female to male. Many felt as though the film should have cast an actual transgender teen boy instead of Fanning, but now the first trailer has arrived and you can judge Fanning’s abilities for yourself.

This should be great news for fans of both Nicole Kidman and director John Cameron Mitchell: the actress is re-teaming with her Rabbit Hole director for another film, this one based on the Neil Gaiman short story How to Talk to Girls at Parties. So that’s good news for fans of Gaiman, as well.

One of our most anticipated upcoming projects is Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon, the director’s follow-up to Drive and Only God Forgives. In keeping with the aesthetic of those films, the first images from his new horror project feature a lovely Elle Fanning doused in neon lighting and dripping with blood. It’s almost too painful to know we probably won’t see this movie until 2016.

Elle Fanning began her career in the shadow of her older sister Dakota, already a star from films like ‘I Am Sam’ and ‘Man on Fire.’ In recent years though, she’s given the elder Fanning a run for her money, turning in strong performances in blockbusters like ‘Maleficent’ (she really looked like she was sleeping!) and working with directors like Francis Ford Coppola (‘Twixt’), Cameron Crowe (‘We Bought a Zoo’), and Sally Potter (‘Ginger & Rosa’). To that impressive list of filmmakers you can now add another big name: Nicolas Winding Refn, as TheWrap reports that Elle Fanning is currently “in negotiations” to star in Refn’s next project, a horror movie called ‘The Neon Demon.’

With every new ‘X-Men’ movie comes new mutants (no, not the New Mutants) and ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ will be no exception.
