by Matt Singer April 19, 2017 @ 1:45 PM
In a few days it will finally arrive: Furious 7, the latest and biggest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise. And while the death of series star Paul Walker does put a damper on some of the excitement, this is still a great time to celebrate one of Hollywood’s most reliable and inventive franchises. In 15 years, Fast & Furious has evolved from a simple B-movie about a couple of street racers to an international crime epic spanning multiple continents and dozens of characters.

Is the Era of the Blockbuster Coming to an End?

There was definitely something apocalyptic about the 2013 summer movie season, and we’re not just talking about the movies themselves.
While major releases, like ‘This Is the End,’ ‘Oblivion,’ ‘Pacific Rim‘ and ‘Elysium,’ dealt with the end of the world, Hollywood appeared to be on the verge of collapse out in the real world. Films that looked like surefire hits flopped; surefire disasters proved to be more disastrous than everyone predicted; the handful of films without numbers in their titles stumbled; and, from the sidelines, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas smirked, shrugged and predicted the end of the moviegoing experience as we know it.
So, what exactly happened here? More importantly, what does this mean for the future of studio filmmaking? It’s easy to imagine Hollywood looking at what happened this summer and learning plenty of lessons; but, maybe, not always the right ones.

Weekend Box Office Report: 'After Earth' and 'Now You See Me' Can't Catch 'Fast and Furious 6'

How rare is it for a Will Smith sci-fi blockbuster to not open at number one at the box office? Also, how horrible must it feel for a Will Smith sci-fi blockbuster to not only get beaten by the second week of a long running franchise about fast cars, but by a magician thriller headlined by Jesse Eisenberg?

'Fast and Furious 7' - Everything We Know About The Upcoming Sequel

No one could have believed, after the generic engine revving of 2009’s 'Fast & Furious' that we still would be talking about the box-office muscle of 'Fast and Furious 6' while also eagerly anticipating 'Fast and Furious 7' in the ongoing stories of Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and his chrome-domed partner in crime, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel).
But that’s what happens when a modern action saga generates nearly $2 billion in worldwide ticket sales – improving its critical response with each passing sequel. It’s no surprise that Universal wants to keep the pedal on the proverbial metal when it comes to ‘Fast’ films. What shocks us is the fact that this franchise hasn’t crashed and burned. Yet.
With 'Fast and Furious 6' opening to an estimated $98M over Memorial Day weekend, Universal’s decision to move ahead on the as-yet-untitled 'Fast and Furious 7' seems like a brilliant move. Audiences obviously haven’t tired of the high-speed adventures of this road crew. ‘Fast and Furious 7’ is racing towards theaters. What do we already know about the sequel?

Holiday Box Office Update: 'Fast and Furious 6' Laps the Competition

by Jacob Hall May 27, 2013 @ 12:30 PM
As always, the extended Memorial Day weekend proved to be a busy couple of days at the box office, with 'Fast and Furious 6' shattering every expectation in its first three days of release (as we reported right here). Meanwhile, 'The Hangover Part 3', uh, did not. But this is a four day weekend! How are both films looking to fare when the holidays are over and all of the dust has settled?

Weekend Box Office Report: 'Fast and Furious 6' Leaves 'The Hangover Part 3' in the Dust

by Jacob Hall May 26, 2013 @ 12:17 PM
What looked like one of the big box office showdowns of the summer turned out to not be battle at all. Not only did 'Fast and Furious 6' take the number one spot at the box office, it did it while shattering records, leaving 'The Hangover Part 3' coughing on its exhaust.

'Fast and Furious 6' Review

'Fast Five' attempted - and quite successfully I might add - a reboot of sorts for the entire 'Fast and Furious' franchise, turning a series of movies about car racing into one exciting heist film. It was big and brash and sweaty and a complete success. So where do you go from there? 'Fast and Furious 6' attempts to answer that question by adding an -er suffix to all those adjectives above. Bigger, brasher, sweatier.
'Fast and Furious 6' is like 'Fast Five' on nitrous - director Justin Lin hits that proverbial turbo boost to go bigger, faster, stronger - and at times, that is a great thing. But when the NOS runs out, the drag race just turns into a drag.
