If you’ve been paying attention to the early box office reports for Tom Cruise’s The Mummy, then you know that cinematic universes are no sure thing in the modern blockbuster era. That being said, the international success of the first films in the Monsterverse  —  the affectionate nickname for the shared universe of Godzilla and King Kong movies  —  has pretty much ensured that Legendary and Warner Bros. will be moving forward with their movie franchises. And while the studio may not be populating their films with the most obvious household names, they seem to be going a more interesting route, pulling together a diverse group of talented actors to anchor their monster-driven stories.Bradley Whitford Joins the Cast of ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’

With Kong: Skull Island out of the way, Legendary and Warner Bros.’ monster reboot series turns its attention to Godzilla once again. The giant lizard gets one more solo outing before its big battle with the king of apes, and we’ve already got quite a cast lined up and prepared to run away screaming from this creature, as Godzilla tradition dictates. Today, one more member, Get Out’s Bradley Whitford, has joined the cast.

With Krampus director Michael Dougherty at the helm, we sort of assumed Godzilla 2 might have more of a sense of humor than its predecessor (a dark sense of humor, obviously) — and the latest addition to the cast definitely supports that assumption. Silicon Valley star Thomas Middleditch has reportedly joined the cast of the upcoming sequel to Gareth Edwards’ monster blockbuster, scheduled to hit theaters in 2019.

The monster-verse is slowly getting invaded by NWA — at least, by the actors who played them. Both Jason Mitchell (Eazy E) and Corey Hawkins (Dr. Dre) had supporting roles in Kong: Skull Island, and today, not wanting to miss out on the fun, O’Shea Jackson Jr. is in talks to join the Godzilla sequel Godzilla: King of Monsters.

After a breakout role in the popular Netflix series Stranger Things, it was only a matter of time before Millie Bobby Brown made her feature film debut. Many fans of the Star Wars films   have pointed out her uncanny resemblance to a young Carrie Fisher and raised the possibility of a Princess Leia standalone movie. And while that film seems destined to happen at some point  —  after all, for better or worse, the internet typically gets what it wants  —  it appears that Brown has targeted another blockbuster science fiction franchise for her big screen break out.

Last October, Legendary tapped Krampus filmmaker Michael Dougherty and co-writer Zach Shields to pen the screenplay for Godzilla 2; not long after, we exclusively reported that Dougherty was also in talks to direct the follow-up to Gareth Edwards’ blockbuster revival. At the time, more than one source informed us that it was pretty much a done deal, but Legendary didn’t make Dougherty’s hiring publicly official until today.

Casually tucked into an official press release to announce the hiring of three new production executives at Legendary, you will find two interesting pieces of info: First is the official title for Godzilla 2, the follow-up to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 monster blockbuster, and second is the title for Pacific Rim 2 — which already had a title, but has apparently been given a much better one.

Just yesterday it was announced that Krampus director Michael Dougherty and co-writer Zach Shields are re-teaming with Legendary Pictures to pen the screenplay for Godzilla 2, the follow-up to Gareth Edwards’ blockbuster monster flick. We’ve known for some time that Edwards isn’t returning to helm the sequel, and with the Rogue One director out of the picture, we’ve been curious to see who might take his place. As it turns out, Dougherty isn’t just writing Godzilla 2 — he’s also directing it.
