Robert De Niro Supports Meryl Streep Speech with Letter
When Meryl Streep took the stage at the Golden Globes ceremony and delivered an impassioned speech calling out President-Elect Donald Trump as an overbearing bully, everyone had their reaction. Many rose up in support of the esteemed actress, celebrating her fiery diatribe as a heroic display of speaking truth to power. Others took issue with her anti-Trump stance, painting the woman as another pampered Hollywood liberal trapped within her bubble of privilege. A third, smaller faction of mixed martial arts enthusiasts took grave offense to Streep’s fleeting diss leveled at MMA and NFL football, and invited the multiple Academy Award winner to settle the matter in the octagon.

How Will the 2017 Golden Globes Winners Affect the Oscars?
The list of 2017 Golden Globes nominees had more surprises to offer than the awards ceremony itself — except for that Aaron Taylor-Johnson win (seriously, what was that?). While this year’s big movie winners were relatively predictable, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association continued their annual tradition of throwing a few curveballs in the television categories ( at least we finally know who’s actually watching Goliath). Now that the Golden Globes have come and gone with little incident, we’re officially on the road to Oscar night, but first! Join us for a recap of the Globes’ winners, losers and most memorable moments — okay, maybe just one moment in particular.

Watch the Funniest Part of Last Night’s Golden Globes
The Golden Globes have a reputation as a kind of edgy awards ceremony. (Well, edgy by the standards of awards shows anyway.) But this year’s host, Jimmy Fallon, is about as edgy as sphere, and his monologue lacked the bite of other previous hosts like Ricky Gervais. The only really funny moment of the night came during one of the awards presentations, when Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig took the stage to give out the Golden Globes for Best Animated Feature.

The pundits mostly said the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama this year was Natalie Portman’s to lose. And she certainly gave an impressive performance as the former First Lady in Jackie. But the Hollywood Foreign Press Association doesn’t listen to the pundits. (I guess they sort of are pundits, in a way.) And they went a different way, picking Isabelle Huppert as their Best Actress (dramatically) for 2016.

The 90 or so members of the Hollywood Foreign Press are always an unpredictable bunch of awards season voters, but that made predictions for the 2017 Golden Globes’ Best Motion Picture Drama award even more uncertain. The awards race has been a close one this year between Manchester By the Sea and Moonlight (and especially close in the Drama category at the Globes with other frontrunner La La Land in the Comedy category). But this year the HFPA decided to honor the Kenneth Lonergan film / the Barry Jenkins film with the top drama prize.

In a move that will come as a surprise to almost no one given the high acclaim for his performance, Casey Affleck has won the 2017 Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his subdued performance in Manchester by the Sea. Affleck’s win was pretty much a lock from the moment the nominees were first announced, with many speculating that his only real competition would be Denzel Washington, who gave a compelling performance in Fences.

La La Land’s backlash arrived a little later than expected this awards season, but that didn’t stop the jazzy bittersweet musical from claiming a top prize at the 2017 Golden Globe awards. In one of the least surprising moments of the evening, Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash follow-up received the award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Next stop: The Oscars, most likely.
