The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 home video release is imminent, and, naturally, because this is a James Gunn movie and a Marvel movie, there will be a bunch of fun bonus features to entice you to purchase it. One of these, Gunn himself announced today, is a music video for “Guardians Inferno,” the disco-inspired track that plays over the movie’s end credits and features a performance by none other than David Hasselhoff.

Based on how this weekend’s box office numbers shaped up, odds are good that you either saw Wonder Woman this weekend or you avoided the theater altogether. It was a record-setting few days for everyone’s favorite warrior princess  —  sorry, Xena  —  but things were decidedly less rosy if your movie was… well, literally anything else. There was a time not so long ago when Memorial Day weekend was a big deal for Hollywood, but this weekend felt more like a bunch of under-performers gathering together and learning very little about life. Call it the anti-Breakfast Club, if you will. This certainly isn’t what Hollywood had in mind for most of the franchises, and while Johnny Depp’s latest pirate movie did OK, OK seems to be the operative word of the summer if you’re not a movie about superheroes or literate villagers. Here’s the weekend gross through Sunday afternoon:

One of my favorite things is those fake “honest” photoshopped movie posters of all the nominees that some out when Oscar season rolls around. Last year Martin Scorsese’s Silence turned into Godfellas, Arrival became War of the Words, and Hell or High Water was retitled Buying a House is Hard. For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, James Gunn thought he’d (as always) have some fun with Easter eggs, and made some fake movie posters of his own for Nathan Fillion’s Simon Williams cameo.

It’s a battle of the science fiction blockbusters this weekend, with Alien: Covenant and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 giving us a photo finish at the box office. The two movies couldn’t be more different in style, tone, and aesthetics, but they equally captured audiences’ attention and shined a light on what the future has in store for both franchises. Here’s the box office numbers as of Sunday afternoon:

Avengers: Infinity War is going to be BIG. Pretty much the Stefon of Marvel movies, it’s going to have everything: all of the heroes we’ve met so far (minus, of course, the dead ones), and some villains old and new, all going after a shiny gauntlet with the power to control the universe. Because the movie has such a big cast, and because that cast hasn’t actually officially been announced yet, fans have theorized about any and all Marvel characters and what their roles could be in the movie. Even Michael Rooker’s Yondu was the subject of some healthy speculation.

One of the big Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 rumors that never came to fruition was that Nathan Fillion, longtime James Gunn collaborator, would make a cameo. He did film a scene, which ended up deleted, but according to a new post by Gunn today, he was almost in another scene, though he didn’t have lines. Unfortunately, it had to be cut in favor of not slowing the movie down. As it turns out, Fillion was never on set, but appeared in a few fake movie posters that would have been on the side of a theater in the cut scene.

It’s a story fit for a mediocre rom-com: A 37-year-old man from Austin, Texas is suing a woman for texting during a screening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. And not just some random stranger, either — she was his date. In what he describes as “a first date from hell,” the woman allegedly refused to put her phone away and continued to text until he finally suggested she take the conversation outside. She did just that, taking her phone out of the theater, through the lobby, and out to the parking lot, where she drove off and left her date without a ride home.

No Marvel franchise is synonymous with a single filmmaker — except for Guardians of the Galaxy, which was transformed from an obscure niche sci-fi series into one of the biggest film series on the planet by writer/director James Gunn. He returned for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and he’s already announced he’ll be back at least one more time to make Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But it almost didn’t happen.

It’s not easy directing a Marvel movie. You’ve got to manage hundreds of creative people, appease your bosses at the studio, and deliver something that is fun for casual fans and hardcore comics nerds alike. If you’re James Gunn, in between doing all of that you also have to correct the constant fevered speculation about your film.
