While the words “period action” and “Guy Ritchie” don’t always go over well with critics, there’s no denying that Ritchie’s 2015 film The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is a cut above the rest. Led by an all-star cast that included Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, and Alicia Vikander, U.N.C.L.E. runs with its Cold War setting and creates a stylish and  —  dare I say  —  sexy story of international intrigue and the dapper spies who saved the world from nuclear annihilation. Unfortunately for its fans, the movie didn’t do particularly well at the box office, only grossing about $110 million worldwide against a $75 million budget. That’s not exactly money that screams sequel, if you know what I mean.

Popular culture travels in waves. A decade or so ago, when every studio was trying to copy The Matrix and start their own action franchises dripping with self-serious stylization and slow-motion fights, I would’ve killed for a summer movie that took a grounded approach to heroes and villains. Now, after several years of Marvel movies and grimdark blockbusters, the pendulum has swung back the other way. It’s not that Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword looks like a good movie, per se. It’s just that I’m in a place where I can really appreciate its goofiness.

Then good news, you have a solid shot at landing one of the starring roles in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming live-action Aladdin remake for Disney!

It’s amazing how much difference a song makes. We’ve been treated to several teasers for Guy Ritchie’s upcoming King Arthur: Legend of the Sword movie, and to this point, I would have described them all as just OK. Ritchie’s particular brand of historical fiction and modern action aesthetics  —  including his signature fast-slow-fast brand of fight choreography —  is something I’ve gone back and forth on a little bit in the last few years. I’m not a big fan of Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movies, but I did rather enjoy The Man From U.N.C.L.E., meaning King Arthur was kind of a net zero in my book.

Is Guy Ritchie still one of our most interesting Hollywood filmmakers? After beginning his career with indie standouts Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, Ritchie has settled into a kind of forgettable jumble of big budget movies that hold their own both with critics and at the box office. I would certainly describe the Sherlock Holmes movies and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. as solid, but ‘solid’ isn’t the type of praise we typically issue to one of our best directors. And King Arthur: Legend of the Sword seems ready to continue this streak. The Arthurian legend with GoPros? Solid. Not great, but solid.

It’s been five years since the release of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and though Guy Ritchie’s sequel paled in comparison to its predecessor, it was a huge hit at the box office — thanks in large part to Robert Downey Jr. The sequel’s success pretty much ensured a third installment (which was officially confirmed earlier this year), and with today’s news that WB has created a writers’ room for the project, it seems that Sherlock Holmes 3 is a little closer to becoming a reality.

In a bit of news that will make you say, “Huh? Why?” it looks like Guy Ritchie might be directing a live-action version of Disney’s Aladdin.

With only a scant few publicity photos to go off of, this first trailer for Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword represents our first real look at universe that Ritchie and his cast are creating. And if there is a recipe for the film, it seems to be this: take the legend of King Arthur, overlay it with Ritchie’s signature kinetic energetic fight sequences and street-smart humor, and cast every beloved character actor from Game of Thrones you can get your hand on. Movies have done far worse with a whole lot better.

Just in case you forgot (which is fair), we have some new photos from the upcoming film, and it looks like the release date isn’t the only thing that’s changed, as Ritchie’s project is now titled King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

Robert Downey Jr. recently surprised fans when he revealed that Sherlock Holmes 3 is not only still on, but it could very well begin filming this fall. And now the franchise’s producer has chimed in, reiterating Downey Jr.’s optimism about potentially heading into production this year, while also revealing that it might not be the last sequel in the series.
