Showtime’s ‘Happyish’ Officially Canceled-ish … Okay, Just Canceled

It’s a wonder Showtime’s Happyish (previously Trending Down) made it through a first season at all, following the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman and subsequent retooling with Steve Coogan in the lead, but now that persistence seems to have worn off. Showtime has officially canceled Happyish, and we’re only sort of sad-ish about it.

Showtime surprised relatively few in getting in on the cord-cutting game with its own independent streaming service, aptly-enough titled “Showtime,” though now the (former) pay-cable network has taken things one step further to create a Hulu bundle.

TV has become increasingly on-demand, to the point even HBO caved on a cord-cutting solution, and now Showtime has followed suit. The premium cable network has announced a July launch for its new online streaming subscription, and one cheaper than HBO’s option at that.

Showtime fans were in for a world of good news today; not only will Dale Cooper lead the ‘Twin Peaks’ revival, but ‘Shameless’ will return for a sixth season! Not enough? Showtime’s ‘Happyish’ has been picked up to series, and will premiere as early as this April!

Among the countless sadness that arose with Philip Seymour Hoffman's passing earlier this year, Showtime was forced to shelve its critically-lauded pilot 'Happyish,' following rave reviews for Hoffman's central role. Now, the network has officially opted to re-shoot the dramedy series' pilot, with Steve Coogan in the lead.

More than just our first trailer for 'Homeland' season 4 and an update on the 'Dexter' spinoff (still never, folks), Showtime's TCA presentation brought with it plenty of good news. For one, sexy Joshua Jackson-Maura Tierney-Dominic West drama 'The Affair' has its first trailer and premiere date, while the late Philip Seymour Hoffman's 'Happyish' comedy may see the light of day after all.

While HBO will be losing a number of major series in the coming year, Showtime's own loss of 'Dexter' and the impending 'Californication' has necessitated some new blood of its own.
