‘Inherent Vice’ Is a Profound Work With the Best Fart Jokes, Says Paul Thomas Anderson at NYFF
"I don’t want to say ‘literary,’ because that’s a bad word," said Paul Thomas Anderson, attempting to describe the essence of Thomas Pynchon's 'Inherent Vice.' It's "beautifully written and, sort of, profound and deeply felt stuff mixed in with just the best fart jokes and poop jokes and silly songs and stuff that you could imagine." As he says, he was "trying to be as faithful to the feeling of the book as possible" in adapting it for the big screen.

The greatest movie trailer of all time is the first trailer for ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.’ This is not up for debate. This is not a subjective opinion. It just is. The trailer for ‘The Phantom Menace’ is so good that I firmly believe its goodwill bled over to the actual movie, inflating some early opinions of a movie that we all, now, realize isn’t very good. (I readily admit that I loved ‘The Phantom Menace’ the first time I saw it.) Here’s a fun thing to try: Forget everything you know about ‘The Phantom Menace’ and just pretend this is a brand new trailer for a ‘Star Wars’ movie.

The first trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's highly anticipated 'Inherent Vice' has finally arrived online, and this is definitely not your average detective story. Based on Thomas Pynchon's 2009 novel of the same name, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix as the unorthodox detective Doc Sportello (yes, really), who gets mixed up in a convoluted and totally out-there crime tale.

In an effort to speed along the effort, we've taken it upon ourselves to list our eighteen favorite character names from Pynchon works. Why eighteen? Well, that's a hidden reference to a conspiracy that you need to argue about on message boards for years. Note: with the acres of episodic text that has poured from Pynchon's fingers, this is really just a drop in the bucket. We fully expect angry letters handwritten on graph paper to arrive via Thurn-und-Taxis post.
