Inside Out

As briefly mentioned in that post featuring the new ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ photo, Disney’s 2015 release slate is kind of insane. The studio is releasing 12 new films, averaging out to one new movie per month. If things go well at the box office (and they probably will), they might very well indeed be the highest-grossing studio next year, thanks to releases like ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ two new Pixar movies, and two new superhero films from Marvel Studios.

T-minus one week and counting until 2015 —and now that we’ve finally put our 2014 top-ten lists to bed, it’s time to turn our attention to the new year. From the looks of things so far, it should be a good one.

The last 'Inside Out' trailer was fine, but mostly left us wanting more. It was a teaser in the truest sense of the word. Today, however, we get our first good look at Pixar's newest film and it's as good as we hoped.

Here’s a new fictional couple for all of us to joyously ‘ship: Kyle MacLachlan and Diane Lane have just joined the voice cast of Disney and Pixar’s ‘Inside Out.’ The pair will voice the parents of 11 year-old Riley in the upcoming animated film, making us all wish that Kyle MacLachlan and Diane Lane were our parents in real life. Not only that, but as an added bonus, the film will apparently venture inside the minds of Riley’s parents, giving us a glimpse at their emotional journey as they cope with their daughter’s own growing pains.

Coinciding with New York Comic Con, Pixar is promoting its new short film, ‘Lava,’ that will play before the theatrical release of ‘Inside Out’ next June. ‘Lava,’ directed by James Ford Murphy, is the story of a lonely volcano who sings – in a style inspired by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole’s version of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ – in an attempt to find his one true love. It’s a sweet story that will garner attention as all the Pixar shorts seem to do – and can serve as a springboard for feature length animated films. This year was the first year in a very long time that we didn't get a new Pixar movie, but that's okay, because 2015 will see two of them -- 'Inside Out' and 'The Good Dinosaur.' 2014 has been a long year. It's the first time since 2005 that we haven't had a Pixar movie and we're feeling a little withdrawal. The good news is that 2015 brings us two new Pixar movies, including 'Inside Out', the next film from Oscar-winning director Pete Docter ('Up'). While some were lucky enough to see the opening five minutes at a Pixar preview earlier this year, the first public release 'Inside Out' footage was made available today on the Disney Anywhere app. And, maybe it's the Pixar withdrawal speaking, but we're starting to get really excited.

Since 2006's 'Cars' Pixar has pumped out a film a year, but production delays in 'The Good Dinosaur' mean that they're sitting out 2014, and the company is not used to taking this much time off. And so last night -- a year to the day before they release it -- director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera presented a scene and the opening five minutes of 'Inside Out.'

For the first year since 2005 we won't be getting a new full-length Pixar film, and while that's kind of a bummer to think about, we do have some wonderful Pixar news to share today.
