"Will Robert Downey, Jr. star in 'Iron Man 4?'" has been a very hot question over the past few weeks. Robert Downey, Jr. and his co-stars have been asked ad nauseum about the potential for another sequel and they've all had varying reactions. But here's a more realistic question: What if it doesn't matter if Robert Downey, Jr. will return for 'Iron Man 4? Marvel, it seems, is already planning for life without their biggest star.

In one of the most public contract negotiations of the modern era, Robert Downey Jr. has let it be known that he finished his contractual obligations to Marvel and to playing Tony Stark and Iron Man. Which means his future involvement with both 'The Avengers' and 'Iron Man' will depend on how much Marvel is willing to pony up.

If you saw 'Iron Man 3' this weekend (and considering how much money it made, we're going to assume you did) and stayed for the post-credits scene, you saw a pretty cool closing credits sequence. But what you didn't see was a nifty opening credits sequence. There was one created for the movie, however, and you can see it right now.

Look, we all knew that 'Iron Man 3' was going to make a whole bunch of money and open at number one at the box office and kick the summer movie season off in style. Although it’s the third installment in the series, 'Iron Man 3' operates in a new and different world than its predecessors. Taking place after the events in 'The Avengers,' the film examines the repercussions of Tony Stark surviving a near-death experience in order to save Earth from an alien invasion – PTSD, the possibility of other extraterrestrial invaders, and so on. But star Robert Downey, Jr. says that the change in the world within the film is symptomatic of changes in the one outside of it.
“On the first Iron Man, we went out and we went to Comic Con, and [Jon Favreau] had a flip phone in his hand and he goes, "This is how it's working from now. You know, the filmmakers, the artists, the departments heads they're all showmen and the audience is talking back, and they're going to ask you that question. In the post Avengers world, "what was it like for Tony and this and that?" So you kind of have to have thought about, and you have to have addressed it creatively.”
The man responsible for addressing it in 'Iron Man 3' is Shane Black, who directed the film and collaborated on its screenplay with writer Drew Pearce. We spoke to the pair at the film’s Los Angeles press day, where they talked about the changing landscape of Tony Stark’s life, and the changing world of superhero films within the Marvel Universe.

Now here comes 'Iron Man 3,' the inaugural film in Phase Two of Marvel's superhero series. So can Tony Stark top 'The Avengers' all on his own?
