J.J. Abrams

After spending much of the 1990s writing screenplays like ‘Regarding Henry’ and ‘Armageddon,’ J.J. Abrams found enormous success on television, creating, writing, and producing a series of critically acclaimed shows including the college drama ‘Felicity,’ the spy thriller ‘Alias,’ and the hugely popular mystery ‘Lost.’ While he continued working in television, developing shows like ‘Fringe’ and ‘Person of Interest,’ Abrams also moved back to film, where he became one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood. He’s worked on the ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ‘Star Trek,’ and ‘Star Wars’ franchises, and paid homage to director Steven Spielberg with the surburban sci-fi picture ‘Super 8.’ He’s famous for his love of “mystery boxes,” the idea that audiences are fascinated by secrets and surprises, and he markets his movies accordingly.

HBO’s Westworld has had its share of production setbacks (as of publishing, without a premiere date as well), but showrunner Jonathan Nolan insists that the sci-fi drama hasn’t undergone any re-calibration, only that the massive production requirements proved significantly more complicated than HBO thought.

J.J. Abrams re-teaming with The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley for a new sci-fi thriller is very exciting, but even more exciting is the third ingredient in this project — Marielle Heller, who made her directorial debut on last year’s indie favorite Diary of a Teenage Girl, will helm the new film, which marks Ridley’s first major starring role outside of Star Wars.

Equal parts electrifying and enigmatic (what baffling performance of James Franco’s isn’t?), Hulu’s take on Stephen King’s time-travel thriller 11.22.63 completed the basic spine of the author’s novel, centered around the assassination of JFK. That said, the limited series’ breakout success wasn’t lost on Hulu or King, who revealed some surprising ideas for a sequel.

J.J. Abrams Comments on Rey’s Parents in ‘The Force Awakens’
Last night, J.J. Abrams participated in a Q&A with Chris Rock at the Tribeca Film Festival, where topics ranged from superhero films to lens flares to — inevitably — Star Wars: The Force Awakens. When asked if Rey’s parents are in the film, Abrams basically said no, sending fans into a speculation spiral as they crossed Han Solo, Luke and Leia off their lists and prepared to begin a new chapter in their theorizing. But then Abrams clarified his comments in a later statement, taking us right back to where we started with this whole crazy speculation game.

J.J. Abrams Says They’ll Be Releasing More ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Deleted Scenes Online
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released on digital HD, Blu-ray and DVD earlier this month with plenty of bonus features, including six deleted scenes. But those scenes only make up about three minutes, when we know that director J.J. Abrams cut almost 30 minutes from his original edit...

CBS 'Star Trek' Series Set in Original Franchise Continuity?
Among the many questions raised by CBS’ announcement of a new All-Access streaming Star Trek for 2017 under Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, fans had to wonder if a TV return would follow the J.J. Abrams reboot films, return to the original timeline, or perhaps exist independent of both. Now, reports suggest that not only is the original continuity back in play, we know which Star Trek properties the new CBS iteration will fall between.

For an actor, the tough thing about becoming famous for playing a single character for nearly a decade on a long-running TV show is that you eventually become identified with that persona, rather than as yourself. So, for instance, if you’re John Krasinski and have made a name for yourself by consistently portraying an aloof but lovable slacker with a penchant for breaking the fourth wall on a pop

J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot’s God Particle is picking up some steam, and following last year’s recruitment of newcomer Julius Onah to direct the long-developing sci-fi thriller, the project has found a pair of impressive actors. Selma’s David Oyelowo and Beyond the Lights star Gugu Mbatha-Raw will play the lead roles in God Particle, which will finally begin shooting sometime this year for a 2017 release.

Among the more surprising developments in recent months was the seemingly-out-of-nowhere announcement that J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot teamed up with genre director Don Coscarelli to restore Phantasm. The cult classic received a full 4k makeover, enhancing both sight and sound to restore the wonderfully weird and creepy horror-fantasy to something even better than its former glory. The remastered Phantasm debuted at SXSW, allowing fans both old and new to rediscover and experience Coscarelli’s cinematic fever dream.

It’s been a long time coming for HBO to get its Westworld adaptation off the ground, longer still given the myriad of production difficulties that might see the Bad Robot-produced drama pushed to 2017. J.J. Abrams himself downplays any behind-the-scenes reports however, noting that the network and all involved want to make sure they get it right.
