'This is 40' Review

The transition from ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’ to ‘This is 40’ has been an interesting one for Judd Apatow. After doing some really personal work on television’s ‘Freaks and Geeks’ -- and getting almost immediately cancelled when no one watched it -- he became a major name in cinematic comedy with the big, broad ‘Virgin,’ a film about a man trying to end decades of sexual starvation. He followed that up with ‘Knocked Up,’ about a young stoner who learns the perils of impregnating Katherine Heigl -- whose sister was played by Leslie Mann, Apatow’s real-life wife, and whose nieces were played by Maude and Iris Apatow, Apatow and Mann’s real-life daughters. While most of the movie was about Seth Rogen and Heigl’s wacky babywaiting shenanigans, there was that small percentage of observational family life comedy with Mann, the junior Apatows, and Paul Rudd, ostensibly playing Judd. It was some of the best stuff in the film, and it pointed the way forward.

Many classic but cancelled series hold the distinction of featuring a number of A-list stars before making their big breaks, but few hold such a distinguished roster as Judd Apatow's cancelled 2000 NBC series 'Freaks and Geeks.' The retro series featured the likes of James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Linda Cardellini, Lizzy Caplan, Busy Philipps, Martin Starr and even Thomas Wilson (Biff of 'Back to the Future'), despite only running 18 episodes. Twelve years later, are you ready to see the entire cast reunite?

We're looking forward to Judd Apatow's 'This is 40' for a number of reasons, and one is Jason Segel. In the film he plays Jason, a personal trainer that Leslie Mann's character Debbie is going to partly for the exercise and partly because he constantly hits on her. In this new featurette, we see more of Segel's time in the film.

Even if 'How I Met Your Mother' stands a giant question mark with a ninth season up in the air, and rumors swirling of cast departures, its good to know that at least the coming season remains fully mapped out.  And while deals are still being finalized beyond 'How I Met Your Mother' season 8, no one is going anywhere yet.  So what does the new season hold, and who will surely be around to see it?

Will Jason Segel Leave 'How I Met Your Mother' After Season 8?

The longer any series carries on, the harder time it will have holding onto it lead stars, but could 'How I Met Your Mother' carry on without any one of its core five?  Recently, fans have had to ask that question as the CBS series enters preliminary talks to extend itself through a ninth season, following the upcoming eighth.  Surely not everyone will be up for an additional year unless the conditions are right, but what is star Jason Segel saying about the possibility?

'The Five-Year Engagement' Review

Y'know how popular comedies often get an "Extended Cut" on DVD? 'The Five-Year Engagement' skipped a step and released its extended cut straight to theaters. It's 124 minutes long, and at least 30 minutes too long. There's a good movie in here, maybe even a great one. But it's buried beneath an awful lot of shoulda-been-deleted scenes.
