What We Do in the Shadows might have to spend a little time there before sequel We’re Wolves ever makes it to theaters, but a TV spinoff might have been unexpectedly greenlit. It seems Jemaine Clement and co-director Taika Waititi may move forward with a Paranormal Event Response Unit spinoff after all, at least in New Zealand.

The BFG — or “Big Friendly Giant” — spends his days in Giant Country, collecting dreams from a magical tree and distributing them to the people of the world. He seems like just the sort of character who would appeal to Steven Spielberg, a big friendly giant of the film world whose work has stimulated the imaginations of millions of moviegoers. But Spielberg doesn’t fully communicate that appeal with his film version of The BFG, which contains a fair amount of lovely images but may be the director’s most listless and dramatically inert movie in decades.

Director Taika Waititi is at Sundance this week to debut his new indie comedy, Hunt for the Wilderpeople. And while he’s promoting that film, reporters can’t help but ask him about a couple of his other upcoming projects — like Thor: Ragnarok and the What We Do in the Shadows spinoff. Today’s news concerns the latter, as Waititi has suggested the title of the upcoming werewolf-centric spinoff, and it’s quite punny.

If that headline didn’t clue you in, then you should know that this is a trailer for Don Verdean, a new absurd religious satire from the guys who brought you Napoleon Dynamite (and some other movies that weren’t as well-liked) — not a trailer for a new religious movie. Although I’d pay handsomely to watch Danny McBride and Sam Rockwell play it straight in a faith-based drama.

What We Do in the Shadows is one of the funniest films of the year — if you’ve been sleeping on it, consider this your reminder to watch it immediately. Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s hilarious mockumentary will likely become a cult classic in due time, but the duo are already developing a potential sequel, this time focusing on the werewolf characters.

That headline is slightly misleading because Jemaine Clement appears to actually be having an okay time in the trailer for People Places Things, the new dramedy in which the Flight of the Conchords star plays a graphic novelist and professor in New York, struggling with a break-up while trying to take care of his two adorable daughters — but he has so much fun with those kids!

It may be a bit early to make such bold claims as this, seeing as 2014 hasn’t even ended yet, but ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ may very well be the funniest film of 2015. The vampire mockumentary created by Jemaine Clement of ‘Flight of the Conchords’ and his collaborator Taika Waititi has been totally killing it (no pun intended) on the festival circuit all year, earning high praise from the critic community. One of the funniest films making the rounds on the festival circuit this year was 'What We Do in the Shadows,' a mockumentary about a group of vampires living together in a flat.
