Director David O. Russell Says Jennifer Lawrence's 'Hunger Games' Contract is Like "Slavery"

by ScreenCrush Staff January 14, 2014 @ 10:46 AM
Comparing anything that isn't actual slavery to slavery is pretty tasteless and generally a really bad idea. Comparing a rich and successful actor's career to slavery is, well, a really bad idea. But, that's exactly what director David O. Russell did, saying Jennifer Lawrence's 'Hunger Games' contract is just like "slavery."

'Catching Fire' to Pass 'Iron Man 3' as the Biggest Movie of 2013

by Mike Sampson January 7, 2014 @ 11:25 AM
At some point today, 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' will officially pass 'Iron Man 3' at the box-office to become the biggest movie of 2013 with just over $409 million. This may not sound like a huge deal, but this marks the first time a female-led movie has topped the yearly box-office chart in almost 50 years.

Sony/IFC Films/Sundance Selects
It's that time of the year: time for top 10 lists, time to start gearing up for awards season, and picking the contenders and ensuring we shout their names in all caps from behind our laptops, and a time for critics to champion our favorite movies and performances -- which is why I think it's time to take a look back at my favorite female-centric (and gender politic-centric) films and female performances of 2013.

'American Hustle' Review

There is so much hair in 'American Hustle.'
Christian Bale's disastrous comb-over/rug combo basically opens the film with a wordless monologue. Beneath that unnatural mop is the sharp mind of Irving Rosenfeld, a “from the feet up” con man making the leap from running legit (but boring) dry cleaning businesses to grifting down-on-their-luck rubes on bad bank loans. His operation starts taking off when he hooks up with Amy Adams, a natural businesswoman looking to reinvent herself. She does this with a name change, a phony British accent and, later in the film, by frizzing her hair out to preposterous proportions.

‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay’ – Everything We Know About the Upcoming Sequels

by Sean O'Connell November 25, 2013 @ 7:35 AM
The “Girl on Fire” set the box office ablaze over the weekend as the Jennifer Lawrence-led ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ burned up and estimated $161 million in domestic ticket sales. It surpassed the opening-weekend number for the original ‘Hunger Games’ film, but fell a bit short of the ‘Iron Man 3’ opening number, which still stands as the highest opening of 2013.
The future of the ‘Hunger Games’ series isn’t in doubt. Long before ‘Catching Fire’ opened, Lionsgate already set the wheels in motion for an adaptation of ‘Mockingjay,’ the third and final book in Suzanne Collins’ YA literary series, to be split into two parts. And since large chunks of filming on ‘Mockingjay’ have been completed, we know a good deal about the upcoming sequel. Such as …

'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' Review

by Jordan Hoffman November 22, 2013 @ 9:38 AM
When the closing credits rolled after the original 'The Hunger Games,' I thought to myself "eh, not bad." But I was in no rush to see the follow-up. When the closing credits rolled after Francis Lawrence's 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,' after I was able to collect myself, I was fully prepared to run out and get a mockingjay tattoo. Over my heart. With the phrase, "I will lay down my life for you, Katniss Everdeen, because you are the first and finest true hero of 21st century cinema."

Your imaginary best friend/girlfriend/not-so-imaginary idol Jennifer Lawrence is making the press rounds to promote 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' this week, and home girl is being asked your typical redundant questions by the pop press -- What is up with your hair cut? What's it like to have an Oscar now? What is up with your hair cut? What's it like to work with such amazing actors? What is your fitness regimen for 'The Hunger Games'? But really, what is up with your hair cut?
There were a couple of questions Lawrence was asked this week that stood out -- female-centric questions, of course -- and that further prove that actresses aren't being asked the same questions as their male peers. And that's not really fair.
