Many have tried to compete with SNL in the realm of Saturday sketch comedy, though few ever shared as much DNA as FOX’s upcoming Lonely Island-produced Party Over Here. It took us aback to see Andy Samberg going against his former boss, but the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star reveals that the group made sure their series wouldn’t compete in the SNL timeslot, or move forward without Lorne Michaels’ approval.

Welp, with MadTV old enough to celebrate a 20-year anniversary (and otherwise off the air to boot), it was only a matter of time SNL found itself with a little Saturday night competition. Still - gasp! - former SNL dream team The Lonely Island will lead the charge of FOX’s new sketch comedy rival, Party Over Here.

One of the most pleasant surprises of the past week was learning about The Lonely Island’s upcoming comedy film, which the hilarious trio are co-producing with Judd Apatow. That’s already enough to guarantee our interest, but the film is slowly stacking its casting deck, recently adding Sarah Silverman, as well as fellow SNL veteran Tim Meadows, and British actress Imogen Poots. In addition, the movie now has an official title.

We hope you Motherlovers are ready for this news: Andy Samberg and his pals from The Lonely Island are teaming up with Judd Apatow to make a movie. This news is so logical that we're surprised it didn't happen five years ago and isn't already an underrated comedy classic.

Though the film has gone on to have a following, 'MacGruber' could have been a career killer for both Will Forte and director (and Lonely Island member) Jorma Taccone. But, luckily for us, Taccone has just signed up to direct his follow up at New Line. The film is called 'Spy Guys.'

'MacGruber' didn't make much of an impact when it hit theaters back in 2010. In fact, the headline the morning after was "'MacGruber' Bombs."
