Whether you are someone who loved or hated Jurassic World when it first hit theaters, there’s probably something we can all agree on: the movie needed itself some Jeff Goldblum. Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm  —  mathematician-turned-dinosaur-expert-turned-intellectual-action-hero  —  is one of the standouts of both the original Jurassic Park film and its sequel, and the news that Goldblum would be returning for Colin Trevorrow’s sequel was a welcome one. Goldblum may not have been enough to save Independence Day: Resurgence, but its a quantifiable fact that all movies are better with a little bit of his signature ‘ums’ and ‘ahs.’

With Jurassic World 2 heading into production this summer, we’ve still got a bit of a wait ahead of us before we see so much as an official still or teaser. But the first piece of promotional art for the upcoming sequel has landed online, featuring a deadly dinosaur peering out from the jungle — you know, like dinos tend to do. It doesn’t give us a lot to go on, but it should get you a little more excited for our return to Jurassic World.

Jeff Goldblum is a National Treasure (like, is Nicolas Cage looking for him, or what?), the latest evidence of which can be found in a charmingly off-kilter new interview, wherein the actor, jazz enthusiast and surprise sausage salesman talks about returning to the Jurassic Park franchise — or, as he likes to call it, “dino-entertainment.” And the series is about to get a whole lot more entertaining now that Dr. Ian Malcolm is back.

From what we hear about Jurassic World 2, it’s going to be a heck of a lot different from Jurassic World, and from most of the rest of the Jurassic movies. We don’t know a ton about the plot, but we do know that the dinosaurs will be used as a kind of metaphor for the treatment of animals in modern society. There’s a lot this movie can do with this: the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park are genetically engineered, making them, by law, property of the InGen bioengineering company. But how can you own a living creature, really? James Cromwell says that his Jurassic World 2 character will be used to examine this situation.

It’s as if Oprah burst through the doors of Universal Studios and started screaming, “YOU get a submarine, and YOU get a submarine, and YOU get a submarine!!!” Actor Kevin Layne recently revealed that the upcoming Jurassic World sequel, much like The Fate of the Furious, is going to have an “epic” submarine sequence. And I’m willing to bet it features at least one dinosaur.

Holy freakin’ cow — that is basically the only practical response to tonight’s late-breaking news. Jeff Goldblum is officially returning to the land of the dinosaurs to reprise his iconic role as Dr. Ian Malcolm in the upcoming Jurassic World sequel. Will he remove his shirt? Will he deliver the signature goofy laugh that spawned one of the greatest YouTube remixes of all time? Will he be bringing any of his former co-stars (like Laura Dern, who recently expressed an interest) with him? We have, uh, so many questions.

OK, it’s not exactly the most surprising news, but it does offer another shred of optimism for those who were maybe a teensy bit disappointed with Jurassic World (that might be an understatement); and if you weren’t, you can just add this to your list of reasons to be excited for J.A. Bayona’s sequel. As confirmed by producer Colin Trevorrow, the one and only T-Rex will return when the park — or something like it — re-opens in Jurassic World 2, which hits theaters in 2018.

J.A. Bayona’s Jurassic World 2 has kicked off production and has been adding cast members left and right for the past few weeks. We know Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt (and probably B.D. Wong) are reprising their roles from the first one, and a few new faces like Toby Jones, Geraldine Chaplin, and James Cromwell are joining up, but so far the exact plot is a mystery. Bayona shared the first image from the film today, and it definitely provides more questions than answers.

Many directors have actors they love to work with over and over — Quentin Tarantino often casts Samuel L. Jackson in his movies, Paul Thomas Anderson liked Philip Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly. J.A. Bayona has worked with Geraldine Chaplin in The Orphanage, The Impossible, and last year’s A Monster Calls, and now he is about to introduce her to his scaly friends in Jurassic World 2.

James Cromwell, who has one of those “Oh, it’s… that guy!” faces, which these days you’ll probably recognize best from American Horror Story, is joining J. A. Bayona’s Jurassic World sequel.
