When Bob Orci left the director’s chair on Star Trek Beyond, we all kind of assumed that there might be some delay in the film’s originally scheduled release — as it turns out, that delay isn’t as big as you may have feared. Paramount has announced that the third installment in the franchise will now hit theaters two weeks later than previously planned.
The other day we brought you the exclusive first images and video from the set of Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond, featuring Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk, Anton Yelchin’s Chekov, Simon Pegg’s Scotty and newcomer Sofia Boutella’s mysterious new alien character. That video was yanked by Paramount, but the studio has allowed it to come back online, giving you the first real look at the highly-anticipated sequel.
Last week Paramount debuted a new video from the set of Star Trek Beyond to promote a massive, six-week-long charity contest asking fans to donate $10 to their charity of choice for the chance to win a special trip to the set or a walk-on role. That video was not only the first official confirmation of Idris Elba’s casting, but it was the first in a planned series of videos from the set. The second has arrived featuring Simon Pegg and Anton Yelchin, as well as a sneak peek behind the scenes.
This delightful new video from the set of Star Trek Beyond offers fans a chance to boldly go where no Star Trek fan has gone before — with a walk-on role in the upcoming sequel. But this isn’t your average contest. Fans are encouraged to contribute to the Omaze charity fundraiser in order to participate, meaning that your goodwill could earn you a very good time.
A few months ago we heard that the new Star Trek sequel is called Star Trek Beyond, but those rumors remained unconfirmed by Paramount. Director Justin Lin has now officially confirmed the title of the third Trek film while also revealing the first photo from the set of the sequel.
After a series of fits and starts with Roberto Orci, who was supposed to write and direct the film before dropping out of the project, Star Trek 3 (supposedly aka Star Trek Beyond) is falling into place under the direction of Fast & Furious filmmaker Justin Lin. After Orci left, the script for the film was rewritten by Doug Jung and the reboot series’ Scotty, Simon Pegg. In a new interview with The Guardian, Pegg explained why Paramount hired him to revamp Orci’s screenplay. According to him, the studio is looking to make Star Trek “more inclusive”:
Sofia Boutella was one of the many highlights in Kingsman: The Secret Service, so we’re happy to hear about her getting cast in any other high-profile project. But Star Trek 3? That’s just cool news, plain and simple. Between this and the rumored casting of Idris Elba, Paramount and director Justin Lin look to be making some pretty bold choices as they expand their ensemble.

Here’s even more good news for you regarding the previously troubled production of ‘Star Trek 3’: now that ‘Fast and Furious’ director Justin Lin has taken over directing duties following the departure of Roberto Orci, the upcoming ‘Trek’ installment has just beamed itself up a new writer to course-correct the screenplay. Simon Pegg—Scotty himself—will now lend his writing talents to the script alongside Doug Jung.
