Kingsman: The Secret Service

Based on the comic book series by ‘Kick-Ass’ writer Mark Millar and ‘Watchmen’ illustrator Dave Gibbons, ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ is about a spy organization that recruits a young criminal (Taron Egerton) to become the newest member of their elite unit of covert operatives. Colin Firth plays the man in charge of the newcomer’s training; a lisping Samuel L. Jackson plays a billionaire who wants to “fix” the Earth via genocidal evil plan.

As ‘Batman’ goes, so goes comic-book movies. When Tim Burton turned the Dark Knight into a retro-gothic hero, Hollywood followed suit with a slew of heavily stylized pulp throwbacks. (See: ‘Dick Tracy,’ ‘The Phantom,’ ‘The Shadow,’ etc.) And when Christopher Nolan turned the Dark Knight into, well, ‘The Dark Knight,’ it sparked a wave of “grim and gritty” movies, with serious superheroes doing and saying serious things in outrageous spandex costumes that had been reimagined as biker gear or body armor. (See: ‘Man of Steel’ [Or maybe don’t.]) There’s been some pushback, but we’re really only now coming out of the trend toward ultra-serious, uber-dark comic-book movies.

Colin Firth is normally the last actor you'd imagine playing a suave and deadly secret agent in the James Bond mold, but he looks right at home in the trailer for 'Kingsman: The Secret Service' (formally known just as 'The Secret Service'). The Oscar-winning actor appears to be brilliantly cast against type in the Matthew Vaughn film, which sees a veteran super-spy taking a young delinquent under his wing and training him to be England's next great secret defender.
