No Escape, a disturbing action thriller, is a change of pace for Lake Bell, who’s best known for lighter fare. By her own admission, that’s by design. We talked about that, the shooting of the movie’s most memorable scene (where Owen Wilson throws the couple’s children from a hotel rooftop), and her desire to direct what she called “big-ass movies.”

Brace yourselves: Jeff Bridges might actually be starring in a good film again, after a string of roles in films in which he’s basically played (much) lesser variations on his True Grit character. The actor has signed on to star in an adaptation of Claire Messud’s acclaimed novel The Emperor’s Children, which — as announced last year — is being helmed by actress and In a World… director Lake Bell.

'Million Dollar Arm' Review: It's Fine

EDIT
by Mike Ryan May 14, 2014 @ 12:51 PM
Million Dollar Arm’ is fine. It stars Jon Hamm, who is fine, as a fine sports agent named J.B. Bernstein who tries to find some fine baseball players in India in this fine true story. And he succeeds, recruiting both Dinesh Patel (Madhur Mittal, who is fine) and Rinku Singh (Suraj Sharma, also fine) who, after a rocky start, both wind up being fine. Lake Bell also stars, and isn’t given a whole lot to do, but she’s fine.
After you see ‘Million Dollar Arm,’ people will ask you, “How was ‘Million Dollar Arm’?” And you will respond, “It’s fine,” then go about your life and probably never once think about ‘Million Dollar Arm’ again on your life. Which is fine.

If you've watched enough trailers, you've probably noticed that the voice-over and text in trailers is usually innocuous babble meant to get audiences excited about an upcoming film. And though voice-overs for trailers have fallen out of fashion, writer/director/star Lake Bell takes on the absurdity of that universe in her directorial debut 'In a World...'

'In a World...' Review

EDIT

Lake Bell wrote, directed and stars in 'In a World...,' and if she's anything like the character she created, I can tell that she's a good person. That's why it pains me to ultimately dismiss her (allegedly) quirky comedy that debuted at this year's Sundance. I like her, I'd be down to hang out in the world she's created, I'm just not interested in watching this convention-driven film version of this story.
