Every family argues at the table. Some squabble about religion, some yell about politics, and some get into screaming matches at Thanksgiving dinner over whether or not Jimmy Fallon is a sniveling sycophant. But while all happy families are the same, all unhappy families are miserable in their own way, and the Lohman clan has an ocean’s worth of bad blood between them. It‘ll all come to the surface when Oren Moverman’s new drama-thriller The Dinner debuts at the Berlinale Film Festival on February 10, and today, those of us unable to jet to Europe can still check it out with the newly released trailer.
Even by the standards of a biopic about an incredibly famous man at the center of an incredibly famous real-life event there isn’t a ton of suspense in Sully. Everyone who was alive and conscious on January 15, 2009 remembers what happened that day, when Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger safely landed US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River after the plane was struck by birds during takeoff.(I certainly do; I’d just arrived at my condo for the Sundance Film Festival and watched the rescue efforts unfold on live television.)
Laura Linney, the three-time Oscar nominated star of movies like Mystic River, Kinsey, and The Savages, has taken on her most challenging role yet: not appearing completely and totally disinterested in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. Exactly who Linney is playing in the upcoming sequel is still a mystery, but we can probably assume that the role won’t ask very much of her and she’ll ultimately class up the whole joint just by showing up. Like Stanley Tucci in Transformers: Age of Extinction, we cannot deny a great actor a paycheck gig every now and again.
