Bill Westenhofer. Lubo Hristov. David Lauer. Gullaume Rocheron. Depending on your beliefs, you may or may not believe that God created the heavens and earth in seven days -- but I can say with some certainty that those men, a quartet of visual effects supervisors and designers (along with many other talented people) created the wondrous sights of 'Life of Pi.' It took them a lot more than seven days, though.

No matter what happens with the finished product, there is no denying the sheer ambition of Ang Lee's 'Life of Pi,' which is already stirring up some heated debate in critical circles. If nothing else, Lee has taken a seemingly impossible to adapt novel and brought it to the screen while pushing technical boundaries with his use of 3D while filming with a live tiger. Two new featurettes explore just how difficult this film must've been to make.

Ang Lee's adaptation of 'Life of Pi' garnered rave reviews after its premiere at the New York Film Festival, with many lauding its celebration of the human spirit as well as its technical prowess. (Its use of 3D is said to rival 'Avatar.') On paper, Ang Lee’s ‘Life of Pi’ sounds like an Oscar-contender. The ‘Brokeback Mountain’ director has Academy recognition (having won the Oscar for his cowboy drama). And he’s tackling a best-selling, prize-winning novel with a plot that presents all sorts of visual and narrative challenges. If he can overcome them, Lee and his adaptation are sure to be in the Oscar conversation. All that’s left is for audiences to see the movie, and this first trailer is going to help sell the goods.

Ang Lee’s adaptation of ‘Life of Pi’ was an intriguing prospect long before we knew the ‘Crouching Tiger’ director planned to shoot in 3D. Yann Martel’s ‘Pi’ is a best-selling novel set predominantly on a raft, and despite its visual limitations, figured to be an Oscar contender based on the weight of the material and Lee’s past successes.
But now Fox is ramping up its efforts to promote the film’s 3D (which we’re hearing is amazing) and unique trailers will begin hitting theaters this weekend with the studio’s ‘Prometheus.’
