Mad Max: Fury Road

In this third sequel to George Miller’s classic ‘Max Max’—the first in almost 30 years—Tom Hardy assumes the title role of Max Rockatansky from Mel Gibson, and attempts to help a group of women (led by Charlize Theron) as they escape from an evil warlord. Chaos and crazy car chases ensue. Miller has been trying to mount ‘Fury Road’ for decades; he finally shot the film, which he describes as “a Western on wheels,” in the summer of 2012 in the deserts of Namibia.

Does ‘Mad Mad: Fury Road’ Actually Have a Shot at the Oscars?
By the end of summer, Mad Max: Fury Road was ranking high on nearly everyone’s Top 10 list, and was even voted the best film of the year by the International Federation of Film Critics. With such praise, Fury Road soon popped up in Oscar discussions, and now Warner Bros. is planning to campaign the film for Best Picture, Best Actress, Actor and Best Supporting Actor. So what does it mean? Does Fury Road actually have a chance this year to not only get nominated, but win in any of those categories?

After rewatching Mad Max: Fury Road over the weekend, there were a few immediate takeaways. One, this movie is still awesome, even after multiple viewings. Second, I think we’ve undervalued the score by Junkie XL. The DJ/composer (also known as Tom Holkenborg) contributed perhaps his best work to Fury Road, a compulsive and propelling piece of music that is as important to the success of that film as anything else. And comic book fans should be excited to know that following that film, Junkie XL has now officially signed on to work on Deadpool next.

When you first watch Mad Max: Fury Road, one of the things you notice immediately are the vibrant orange and teal colors that saturate almost every frame of the film. But, it’s not always the way the film was intended. Director George Miller said they played with the saturation level during post-production, going back and forth between completely draining all the color and really cranking up the colors, eventually deciding on the latter. Miller even went so far as to say that he felt the “best version” of Mad Max: Fury Road was in black and white. There were rumors of a black and white version of the film being included on the Blu-ray, but that never happened. Luckily, a film student made his own version: Mad Max: Black & Chrome.
