Guillermo del Toro's ('Hellboy,' 'Pan's Labyrinth,' 'Pacific Rim') latest venture into the horror genre -- well, as a producer anyway -- was with the Andy Muschietti-directed 'Mama,' and it's hitting DVD and Blu-ray Tuesday, May 7. Don't got the money? It's cool, we have five copies on Blu-ray.
The Guillermo del Toro-produced horror flick 'Mama' marked Andy Muschietti's directorial debut and about an $89.2 million box office payoff -- and there are still 43 territories or so to see the film. With all this success, it's only natural for Universal to want to maximise their profit by shelling out a 'Mama 2,' and it looks like the studio is already planning such a move. Too bad it'll most likely be without Muschietti behind the wheel.
'Mama' was a huge hit for Universal Pictures (over $50 million so far) and you know what that means for a horror film: 'Mama 2.' But while studio executives are surely working on a way to spin 'Mama' into the next big horror franchise, there's one person who doesn't think there should be a 'Mama 2' - the director.
The "Creepy Kid" movie is officially a genre. From 'Village of the Damned' to 'The Bad Seed' to shots of Danny Torrence spaced out and making noises from the back of his throat in 'The Shining,' there's something that cuts from the screen directly to whichever gland releases that “flight” endorphin in your brain. While the marketing material makes it seem as if 'Mama' is going to be a Creepy Kid movie for the ages, it falls upon me to report that, sadly, this is not the case. This is, at root, another "Kid in Peril" flick, and while that has a value all its own, it is not quite a vehicle for inexplicable, nightmare-inducing horror.
'Mama,' the creepy-children-type horror flick produced by 'Pacific Rim' helmer Guillermo del Toro and directed by first-timer Andres Muschietti, is prepping for its initial release Friday, January 18. If you're still debating whether it's worth your money or not, you should decide after checking out these five clips from the film -- about 4:10-worth of footage in all.
Next month will see the release of 'Mama', the latest spookfest from producer Guillermo del Toro. Starring Jessica Chastain, the film is the feature debut for director Andy Muschetti, who got his chance at the big time when del Toro saw his short film of the same name - which we now have for your viewing pleasure, complete with an introduction by Guillermo del Toro himself!
Guillermo del Toro always has a few projects up his sleeves, but when he's not working on his own films, he's producing creepy little movies like last year's 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark,' and the upcoming 'Mama.' Check out the first official trailer for 'Mama' and get ready to hide your eyes.
Although the following paragraphs will essentially be a report about some pretty standard movie industry going-ons, it's also a nice look at the interesting variety of projects that Universal has on its plate. Sure, the meat of the story here is that the studio has set release dates for 'Oblivion,' 'Rush' and 'Mama,' but can you think of three projects that sound more different and involve such talent?
