We haven’t known exactly what to make of MTV’s take on the classic Scream franchise, first reinventing the concept, then ditching the iconic mask. The Tuesday premiere has spilled a bit of blood early however, releasing the first eight minutes of the reborn teen slasher, and wouldn’t know it, MTV’s Scream is pretty damn effective.

MTV’s forthcoming Scream TV series has taken a curious choice to reboot the iconic franchise, new mask and all, but it seems copyright issues have created a new backstory for one of the horror classic’s most enduring images. MTV’s updated take on the Scream concept has debuted to mixed acclaim, particularly the decision to forgo the classic “Ghostface” mask that so defined the franchise. Now, our first look at the new mask has arrived, and … well, the word “frightening” comes to mind, though perhaps not as they’d hoped.

Originally running from 1998 through 2002, Celebrity Deathmatch was an MTV staple, pitting various famous faces from various branches of the entertainment industry against each other in brutal fights to the death (all of them rendered in stop–motion animation). Following its cancellation, the show was revived once more in 2005, this time on MTV2, before being cancelled again in 2007. Now, it looks like the network is returning to that bloody claymation well once more. Celebrity Deathmatch will soon make a grand return to MTV2.

It’s been a long time coming, but MTV has finally donned its mask and raised a knife to stab out its attempt at a Scream TV series. The Kevin Williamson slasher classic may look and feel pretty different by its first MTV trailers, but will we all Scream for the new series premiere this summer?

Unsurprising as it was to see MTV joining the movie-TV reboot trend with an adaptation of iconic teen horror thriller ‘Scream,’ we have to admit a bit of pause with the notion of MTV’s rendition ditching the iconic “Ghostface” mask. Now, producers have gone on record to confirm that while “Ghostface” is no more, in its place will be a “darker” take on the classic look, potentially one made of human skin.

We don't know exactly what MTV's take on the 'Scream' franchise will look like, given recent rumors that suggested the iconic "Ghost Face" killer would have no part in the Kevin Williamson-adapted horror reboot, but the network will at least give us the chance to learn the rules all over again. The 'Scream' TV series has officially been granted the green light with a full season for October 2015.

TV rebooting stagnant film franchises has become a fact of life these days, though it seems one of the more developed adaptations may eschew its most iconic aspect. MTV's forthcoming 'Scream' TV series pilot has been said to tell an all-new story independent of the four-film franchise, but might the teen horror adaptation ignore the "Ghostface" mask that has become synonymous with the series?
