Things were looking pretty rough for Pacific Rim 2, but the sequel has been coming together slowly but surely, first with the addition of former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight as director, then with Derek Connolly as screenwriter, and — best of all — with John Boyega joining the cast as our new apocalypse-canceller. Today brings even more good news for fans of the kaiju vs. robots blockbuster, as Pacific Rim 2 has been given an official release date.

It’s been a long, slow trip to the screen for Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to Guillermo del Toro 2013’s sci-fi blockbuster, and for a while it didn’t look like the movie would happen at all. Back in January, there was even talk that the movie was “off the table indefinitely,” but a few months later, development began to get more serious...

Depending on how you felt about Jurassic World, this news may or may not be very good: Derek Connolly, the screenwriter behind Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic sequel, has been tapped to write the screenplay for Pacific Rim 2. If you weren’t particularly fond of Connolly’s work on the dinosaur blockbuster, then this news has probably inspired an audible groan accompanied by a healthy eye roll, but perhaps you should consider giving it a chance.

A quick refresher for those not up on the brief but troubled history of the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s kaiju-throwback Pacific Rim: First, the notorious G.D.T. confirmed that the sequel would be here by April 2017. The production team had plans to beginning shooting back in November, but by September, presiding studio Universal had deemed a Pacific Rim sequel a low priority and placed it on the proverbial back burner. After indefinitely halting production on the film in mid-September, Universal took the film off of its release calendar at the end of that month. As recently as last month, Universal stated it had no interest in producing the film on its own — perhaps due to Crimson Peak’s sadly lackluster showing at the box-office — but apparently the project has taken on a new life due to Legendary Pictures. (Worth noting is that Legendary was recently acquired by China’s Wanda Pictures, and that Pacific Rim played like gangbusters overseas.)

‘Pacific Rim 2’ Isn’t Dead Yet, Says Guillermo del Toro
Guillermo del Toro and Universal are engaged in a serious game of tug-of-war with our hearts. In what’s become the worst case of “will they or won’t they” in recent movie history, Pacific Rim 2 has been delayed, canceled, revived, and — most recently — taken “off the table indefinitely.” Not so fast, according to del Toro, who is once again quashing rumors that the sequel isn’t happening.

Persistent rumors have suggested that Universal is no longer planning on delivering Pacific Rim 2, but that hasn’t stopped Guillermo del Toro from talking about his plans for the (possibly?) upcoming sequel. Although the film has been removed from the studio’s release calendar, del Toro is still trying to work things out, and he has at least one popular actor he’d like to cast.

Report: ‘Pacific Rim 2’ Has been ‘Halted Indefinitely’
A fascinating new article in The Hollywood Reporter, details a growing battle between Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the production company behind films like The Dark Knight, Man of Steel, Godzilla, and Jurassic World. This spat between entertainment titans sounds like it could grow into a full-on war akin to a rumble between giant robots and interdimensional aliens — partly over the studio’s reluctance to make a movie about giant robots warring with interdimensional aliens. That film, of course, is Pacific Rim 2, and according to THR, it’s been “halted indefinitely.”
