It’s the kind of rumor that looks really great in a headline. What if a Pacific Rim sequel brought Godzilla, the King of the Monsters, into the fold? What if director Guillermo del Toro’s giant robots battled the legendary creature in the ultimate battle royale? The rumor has been gaining steam and we hate to be the ones to burst anyone’s bubble, but this isn’t going to happen.

Guillermo del Toro is a director who constantly has several projects on the table, and while that may seem odd to some, it’s actually a smart approach. Take Martin Scorsese, for instance, who always has many projects under consideration. Del Toro currently has a handful of films in the works, but only a couple that are moving forward for the time being: Pacific Rim 2 and his long-gestating Haunted Mansion.

While his honesty is quite admirable, perhaps Charlie Hunnam shouldn’t be biting the hand that feeds him — but that’s what he did in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. While discussing his upcoming role in Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur movie (where he apparently plays a Knight who sells Levi’s jeans in catalogs), the conversation turned to effects, which then turned to Pacific Rim, which then led to Hunnam sticking his foot in his mouth and then trying unsuccessfully to remove it.

Because just one movie about giant robots punching giant monsters in the face simply isn’t enough, Pacific Rim 2 is officially set to begin filming this Fall in Toronto. But that’s not the only piece of news worth sharing – it seems that Guillermo del Toro’s sequel may have a subtitle and that subtitle may be Maelstrom.

If you thought we were done with release date news for the day, you were wrong. Universal has revealed even more information from CinemaCon, including a few date changes for those keeping tabs on some of their major upcoming films. In addition to previously announced dates for the Fifty Shades sequels and Fast and Furious 8, the studio has also revealed dates for Pacific Rim 2, Warcraft and a couple of films from their revamped monsters franchise.

When Guillermo del Toro last spoke about ‘Pacific Rim 2,’ we learned that the sequel would feature some—but not all—of the characters from the first film, and that he wanted to have the remaining characters appear by the end as a way to (hopefully) build to a third installment. And now we have a more detailed update from the director as the sequel takes shape and prepares to enter production, including more plot specifics and at least two characters who will definitely be returning for ‘Pacific Rim 2.’

Here's what we know so far: 'Pacific Rim 2' is scheduled to hit theaters in 2017, and director Guillermo del Toro has previously mentioned digging deeper into concepts like the Drift and the portal which allowed the Kaiju to enter our world. That's it! That's all we know. But now there's more: the director has spoken again, this time teasing plans for a trilogy.

We hope you like jaegers, because we're about to get hit by a huge wave of 'Pacific Rim'-related movies, TV and comics. While Guillermo del Toro announced 'Pacific Rim 2' for 2017, there's also more comic books and an animated television series on the way, the latter of which the director revealed will help bridge the gap between where the first film ends and the sequel begins.

'Pacific Rim 2' is finally on the way for a 2017 release. While the first didn't do so well in the US, it killed overseas, proving that the world does want more Jaegers. But that doesn't mean director Guillermo del Toro can't squeeze in a smaller film before then.

A few weeks ago our movie prayers were answered when it was announced that Guillermo del Toro received the green light to move forward with 'Pacific Rim 2,' but that's not all: he's also working on an animated series and continuing the 'Pacific Rim: Year Zero' graphic novel tie-in, giving us plenty of Jaeger and Kaiju adventures over the next few years. In a recent interview, the director opened up about these projects and gave some hints about what we can expect from 'Pacific Rim 2.'
