'Prometheus' Review

Here's the thing: if you have a dozen engaged and insightful friends who are willing to share a beer after seeing 'Prometheus,' you can talk yourself into thinking it's a fabulous movie. That's assuming you and your friends are positive people. If it's the other way, you'll be shouting “Fie! Scott and Lindelof, you've wasted our time!”
'Prometheus' is a nothing if not aggravating. It comes within spitting distance of greatness, yet is still something of a disappointment. There was not one moment where I wasn't dazzled, yet I feel like I'm still anticipating the good stuff that's about to come – even though I left the theater hours ago.

With the release of 'Prometheus' mere hours away (for people stateside), it's worth noting that there aren't just three sequels and one prequel to Ridley Scott's 'Alien.' There was also a ride called 'Aliens: Ride at the Speed of Fright,' and that ride employed an auteur to direct its footage (intercut with snippets from James Cameron's 'Aliens'). That auteur: Stuart ('Re-Animator') Gordon.

Ang Lee’s adaptation of ‘Life of Pi’ was an intriguing prospect long before we knew the ‘Crouching Tiger’ director planned to shoot in 3D. Yann Martel’s ‘Pi’ is a best-selling novel set predominantly on a raft, and despite its visual limitations, figured to be an Oscar contender based on the weight of the material and Lee’s past successes.
But now Fox is ramping up its efforts to promote the film’s 3D (which we’re hearing is amazing) and unique trailers will begin hitting theaters this weekend with the studio’s ‘Prometheus.’

Is 'Lost' Writer Damon Lindelof Returning to Television?

by Jacob Hall June 2, 2012 @ 10:26 AM
The Verge
With 'Prometheus' less than a week away from its domestic release, screenwriter Damon Lindelof has announced that he's taking a break from movies to go back the world that birthed his career in the first place: television. Why is this such a big deal? Easy: Lindelof was one of the head writers and showrunners on a little show you might have watched called 'Lost.'

Retro Rental: If You're Excited for 'Prometheus' Watch 'Eden Log'

[Each week, inspired by what's in theaters or in the news or even just by random firings of neurons, "Retro Rental," by film critic James Rocchi, looks at an older film on disc or download that links up to the here-and-now ...]
With Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' coming soon -- a rumored return to the universe of his 1979 'Alien,' a more definite return to science-fiction for Scott most certainly and a showcase for actors like Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace and Idris Elba … Well, it's to be looked forward to.
And we've got a suggestion for an older film to watch to help get you excited (and no, it's not 'Alien').
