Russell Crowe Thinks Actresses Are Lying About Ageism
Russell Crowe pretty much just inserted his own foot into his privileged male mouth. It’s hardly news that actresses face sexism, ageism, and other sorts of unpleasant -isms in Hollywood, but the actor thinks their complaints about ageism specifically are “bulls---”—which is both a willfully ignorant and completely sexist opinion. Hey, Mr. Crowe, ageism in Hollywood, much like dry land in ‘Waterworld,’ is not a myth.

It’s remarkable that ‘Nightcrawler’ is Dan Gilroy’s first directorial effort. The film is so stylized – but not in a “look at my style!” kind of way – that it feels like it’s from someone who has at least done this before. It’s funny to listen to Gilroy – brother of fellow writer/director Tony Gilroy – explain why he finally wanted to direct, which basically comes down to his nice way of saying, “other people were screwing up my vision.” And now he’s written ‘Nightcrawler,’ and Gilroy wasn’t about to let anyone else screw it up.

One of the films that may be flying a little under your radar is 'Nightcrawler,' the new movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal as the off-kilter Lou Bloom, a guy who inserts himself into the lurid world of L.A. cable news. In this new clip, Gyllenhaal makes an introduction to Rene Russo, who plays reporter Nina, and although brief, you get a sense of the film's darkly comedic tone.

Last year, Matthew McConaughey rose from the ashes of bad action movies and crummy rom-coms to completely reboot his career. With roles in 'True Detective' and 'The Dallas Buyers Club,' the so-called McConaissance began. The resurgence was remarkable for how unlikely it was to happen, so what are the odds it could happen again this year...

“Do you want to do an interview in bed? It’s never happened. Come on. It’ll be fun.” These are the words Rene Russo said to me when I entered her hotel room to interview her at the Toronto International Film Festival for the movie ‘Nightcrawler’ -- which just happens to be written and directed by her husband, Dan Gilroy, who (A) I had just met and (B) who had just left the room.

A few weeks ago, I was in a local drug store by my apartment in New York City. Near the back of the store, there’s a discount rack where everything is 25 percent off its the original price. Mixed in with overstocked seasonal items was a LEGO set for the 2010 movie ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.’ Included in the set was a mini LEGO figure of Jake Gyllenhaal. He’s riding an ostrich. As I stared in disbelief at LEGO Jake Gyllenhaal riding an ostrich, it was like staring into an alternate future where these were the kind of movies that Gyllenhaal was still making … instead of a glorious movie like ‘Nightcrawler.’
